Did you know that 78 RPM was only a suggestion for the first few years of phonographs? If a record was recorded at a different speed, it changes the key of the song to play back at 78. A remarkable website allows you to tweak the playback of old recordings to get the speed right, and to take out hiss & pops and to simulate room tone. It’s like colorization for music. This is the instructional video for the collection. vimeo.com/585399927

@rlpaulprodn Checking in as somebody who not only already knew that, but as somebody who is also aware of 16RPM records and as someone who has a few 80RPM records in her collection.
Def wanna check out that site for cylinder recordings, which were at 2 different speeds at least. How is it with wire and tape recordings?

@claralistensprechen3rd - He collects cylinders and vinyl, principally. I’ve been in his basement and only remember seeing those (and a paper-and-smoke recording from the 1860s). He worked at NPR for a long time, so he probably has tape, but I don’t think it’s his principal interest.

@rlpaulprodn Wire recordings are the hardest to find so I'm not surprised. When they are found, they're in the most urgent need of restoration.
