@redcrew We did that one year using the plastic jug method. Half the seedlings died. The other half were spindly. We gave away a bunch of little plants and kept 32. The next year we just raised little plants in our basement with grow lights and fans.

@tasharoni Sorry winter sowing didn't work out for you. Overall, I had good success last year with winter sowing.

Are you planning to start seeds in the basement this year?

@redcrew The basement has become the black hole of my husband's gaming hobby stuff. So, I am thinking about starting some seed in my kitchen-dining room.

I've come to the conclusion that the best bang for the buck are lettuces, beans, and herbs.

@tasharoni Gotcha. Do you have a favorite lettuce variety? What herbs are you planning to grow?

@redcrew Green leaf and Romaine lettuces work out great to pick individual leaves. I'm going to grow Italian basil, Thai basil, lemongrass, French thyme, sage, savory, spearmint, dill, chives, oregano, rosemary, Zaatar (Palestinian thyme plant. Not the mix), and Italian parsley, I am also going to grow Jalapeños, Pepperoncini, Japanese eggplants, French beans, and Italian beans. Italian beans are rarely, if ever, in stores or markets.
