So I bought a Mini. It arrived yesterday. I’m migrating from my 2019 27” iMac. Difficulty level +1, using the iMac as a monitor. Difficulty +1, I only got 1 usb-c to usb adaptor. I just ordered 2 more. I have a usb hub to use in the meantime.
I’ve got an hdmi capture dongle.
1st puzzle was figuring out how to plug stuff in. Took 1/2 hour, with a trip to the basement to get another keyboard.

@qurlyjoe have fun! I found my M2 mini really did not work well with HDMI, and Thunderbolt/DisplayPort worked better

@scruss @qurlyjoe We got an M2 Mini at work last year and I noticed I was missing a couple of resolutions via HDMI that appeared over USBc. Samsung 4K 27” display. I kinda shrugged my shoulders because it worked out, but it was a bit perplexing.

@Devils_Rancher @scruss
I stumbled across a place in Settings to change the resolution. Not sure if that’s what you’re talking about.

@qurlyjoe @scruss Yeah, in settings I had fewer choices when connected via HDMI.

@Devils_Rancher @qurlyjoe my M2 wouldn't wake up properly when using HDMI. It also wouldn't give all the possible resolutions

@scruss @qurlyjoe It’s wonky. We have an M1 iMac that has a second display attached using a usbc-hdmi dongle. Sometimes the full list of resolutions disappears (everything goes out of scale on the external) and it takes a reboot to bring them back. Random.

I can see what you mean about missing resolutions. The native iMac resolution is way better than the default with hdmi. I’d really not have to spring $1600 for a studio monitor. I saw an ad for a Dell 27” but didn’t look close enough to see how it would connect.
The setup right now is less than optional. Need 2 keyboards and mouses. Haven’t got the second Bluetooth mouse to work yet.

@qurlyjoe @scruss I’m old and just don’t need 5k - I’ve been really happy with the Samsung overall. At home, I spent a little extra on the one with Ethernet, and all I need to do is plug my MBP into the usbc cable when I get home and it’s all connected & charging. Lots of USB peripherals on hubs attached to the monitor as well. It would be nice if it had thunderbolt thoughput, but not $1000 nice.

@Devils_Rancher @scruss
I like the large monitor for working with my photos. I really don’t need the fastest processor but on the other hand, being old means I’ve got less time to wait for something to finish before I die. (Slight exaggeration.)

@qurlyjoe @scruss Ha, I get that. My kids aren’t going to inherit anything but “projects.”
