Pomegranate County Irregulars

In 2023, I wrote a sci-fi rock song about a corporate-controlled A.I. that erased all the original blues men and women. It also got pissy if you insisted Robert Johnson (and others) existed.

Crazy? Right?

@frigginglorious @pomCountyIrregs Interestingly I don't boost song.link links for three reasons:

[a] they require an extra click before you can hear the song (as opposed to going directly to a page where you can listen),

[b] sometimes they only include streaming services you have to sign up for before listening, and

[c] for those of us with privacy plugins in our browser, the song.link page itself can take over a minute to load.

[more ...]

@frigginglorious @pomCountyIrregs I also won't boost links to exploitative sites: Facebook, Spotify, Google pages, etc.

I always boost links which embed the song directly in the Mastodon message (eg Mirlo, Bandcamp, Soundcloud etc).

I usually boost links to pages where the listener can hear the song immediately without signing up (eg Faircamp, Ampwall, personal websites etc).

I realise this makes me a pedant. If song.link and similar services work for you, fair enough I guess.

[... ends]

@herr_irrtum @pomCountyIrregs @elsemusic I have a hard disagree on this stance! That apple music link only let's me listen to snippets of songs. Songs aren't meant to be algorithmically edited!

Granted, song.link doesn't find bandcamp/faircamp links automatically - I think that has something to do with using a kind of ISBN number with your tracks when u upload them?

But it's super privacy friendly. They even use youtube-nocookie domain for embedded videos.

@frigginglorious @herr_irrtum @elsemusic

I split up my links between Bandcamp and Apple Music. Not everyone can use Apple Music, that’s true, but it is the second largest. The largest streamer I shall not name. This would have been there.

Any way, exploitative or not, my music is at a streamer because I let it be there. Any one who has reasons to not go some where, it’s okay by me.

With all true respect, I’m unlikely to change my methods, but I will note concerns for future considerations.

@pomCountyIrregs @frigginglorious @herr_irrtum I think you have to take what you believe to be the best approach.
