she wasn’t afraid of risking her career to stay true to her left-wing activism, human rights & social justice. she & her husband, yves montand, often showed solidarity with activists & striking workers by turning up at demos to support them.

marguerite duras called her a queen & said that she ‘freed france from all her limitations & gave her an international presence’. simone loved with passion & loyalty, from both a personal & a universal perspective. 
you know she was cool, too: she was the inspiration for nina simone’s showbiz sobriquet & none other than jane fonda credits her for introducing her to the world of political activism.
