IMO that the #carbontax is gone because the liberals made it the center piece legislation to mitigate the effects of climate change with no structure to support it. I think the policy had merit.
I don’t think Carney is going to do much beside incentive structures for technological fixes that continue the lie that we as a society don’t actually need to make any fundamental changes to how we live #canada #cdnpoli #ottawa #climatechange
I’m unclear, and I doubt an election focused on #trump and the amorphous “cost of living” is going to make it clearer how #markcarney and Pierre differ on actual climate change mitigation. Which, seems like nothing tbh. I’ve heard at least Carney believes it is a real threat unlike conservatives writ large #canada #cdnpoli #ottawa
@grivettcarnac i’m glad you’re sharing this, i was sad to see wealth tax and carbon tax disappear. feels like first with covid and now trump, these problems keep getting bumped back 5 years every time.
@grivettcarnac
He will likely boost grants for home and business climate efficiencies because that supports the internal economy. If Canada wants real climate action, we need to nationalize petro.
@grivettcarnac The failure to attach a story to it and to have the deposits coded in a meaningful way (I know physical cheques are a waste, but there's a reason why Ford sent his bribes that way!) was really mind boggling.
@dairpo also a very important part of this. We could never tell when it was deposited unless we searched for the really weird and obscure letters and numbers
@grivettcarnac It has merit but it was always designed to not be high enough to actually affect behaviour. Look at the proliferation of trucks and SUVs. So it was attacked for being both ineffective and inflationary. Of course, with the oil, gas and car industry in this country, it was always going to be hit by propaganda.
@orleansfietser 100% no question. At a bare minimum it could have been connected to so many other policies to change actual behaviour instead of “costing” people just enough to not change behaviour except to increase bitching about it
@grivettcarnac People may have noticed reinvestment such as transit as a positive as opposed to a small anonymous deposit. With advertising saying "paid for by carbon tax".
