I'm no expert but as I understand it the only traceable aspect of Signal is the signup, which can be used link people to each other. (Which is one reason they recommend invite by username, and then change your username frequently.)

I remember a civil rights attorney, Stanley Cohen, telling me way back when I was on Twitter, that they can get to signal too. I don't remember how the government can do it, just that they are able. I also don't remember how he knew this but it was legit. I do recall he said it was more difficult but still doable.

I know that was all kinds of help 😆

Ultimately nothing in the world can ever be 100% secure.
But generally speaking. The accessible info on Signal is about signup.

@_L1vY_ @DoNotPunchDown @PersistentDreamer @josephcox I recommend Element (using the matrix protocol) as a replacement for Signal

@mistergibson @josephcox @PersistentDreamer @DoNotPunchDown There's no way. I just spent six aggravating months getting everyone I could off phone msg and Whatsapp to Signal. The most recalcitrant people who don't "get" tech. From friends, colleagues, and clients to neighbors and my kid's friends. It's gonna have to do! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think it may also be about group chats. That's kinda what I'm remembering.

Signing up makes sense.

Thank you

Ah yes, we can't always control what gets out of group chats.
But we can limit it somewhat. I have mine set to "no screenshots" and also messages disappear after two weeks. And I change my username monthly to use for any invitations (instead of phone number).
