All 3 eaglets are doing well. Mom Jackie is covered in snow, sheltering those sweet babies with her 7000+ waterproof feathers.
The 2 Fort Meyers eaglets died in January after consuming an infected bird that had been fed to them by their parent eagle. The autopsy showed that they were killed by avian flu. Their parents are currently asymptomatic but being closely monitored. For the chicks, their death came after signs of fatigue & seizures.
In January 2025, two baby bald eagles, E24 and E25, from the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam nest in North Fort Myers, Florida, died from H5N1 bird flu. The eaglets were believed to have contracted the disease after their father, M15, brought an infected bird into the nest for food.
Today there appears to be only 2 chicks. The nest bowl is obscured by snow and it is possible that the other eaglet is alive in there somewhere - their crop can hold enough food to last them a day or more - but it is unlikely. The 2 chicks are wet and cold & tonight it'll get down around -5°C.
It can be excruciating to watch this play out, but I'm finding that it is a good thing that this is completely out of my control. My only job in this is to bear witness.
Be well.
