I'd say the election of George W. Bush in 2000 with the help of the Supreme Court stopping the recount of votes in Florida confirmed it. Even if it was legitimate, he won by a margin of 537 Floridian votes. He lost the popular vote by 543,895. 537 votes mattered more than literally more than 1000x that amount nationwide and now we're here. It was always going to happen in a system like this.
