New shiny keys. Don’t forget all the other atrocities. Eye on the ball.

says he's signing an order to build a migrant detention camp in Guantanamo Bay

@GottaLaff Concentrating migrants in camps. The historical parallels are gobsmacking.

@tobie1 @GottaLaff Extra chilling is that he wants to get around constitutional rights, same as Bush did with the prisoners. That is extra level chilling. Throw people in there and no human rights monitoring.

@CStamp @tobie1 @GottaLaff

When Bush removed rights from prisoners and when the Patriot Act removed privacy from American citizens, the Left was screaming and warning everyone that this would be a slippery slope. Everyone then (and now) claimed this was an exaggeration.
* shrugs *

@per_sonne @tobie1 @GottaLaff The orange rapist walks out of legal agreements with countries around the world, too bad Cuba couldn't tell his to screw off and leave their country. It's abysmal that the US is allowed space on their country, especially considering how the US treats Cuba. :(

@per_sonne @tobie1 @GottaLaff The Patriot Act also affects non Americans. Any non American who stores anything in a US cloud or gives any info to an American company is jeopardizing their privacy. :(

@per_sonne @CStamp @tobie1 @GottaLaff things why I’m always suspicious of anyone who blames “the Left” for the current situation. We’ve tried everything except violence to fix things. And I’m just gonna stop talking there.

@roque @CStamp @tobie1 @GottaLaff

"The left demanded other human beings to be acknowledged, to have rights like everyone else and not be discriminated against or downright stepped on, oppressed, exploited for profit or murdered?! No wonder people turned to Fascism! It was becoming intolerable! You can't say or do anything any more against people who we deem inferior! Stop curtailing my right to be an asshole!!"

@tobie1 @GottaLaff
Yeah, on an island where no one can keep track of the atrocities? Oh Hell No!

@GottaLaff The only reason to use Guantanamo Bay is to avoid what little scrutiny and rule of law is left. Those people will simply be "disappeared".

@GottaLaff @zenheathen secrecy is not good for accountability, especially this clown cluster

@v_claire @GottaLaff @zenheathen
Secrecy is so bad for accountability that evading accountability is its most common use. The classic case of this is US v. Reynolds, the case that established the states secret doctrine in US law. It turns out the secret documents in that case didn't actually involve any real secrets; they were only used as an excuse for shutting down the lawsuit. So the doctrine is based on a fraud, but that hasn't removed the precedent from the books. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United

@zenheathen @GottaLaff
The point of using Gitmo is to inspire fear. I won't say the whole exercise is theater- a lot of people are going to be hurt- but the theatricality is deliberate. I'm sure Trump and company want to get rid of a lot of undocumented immigrants, but they also want the ones they can't deport to be so terrified of La Migra that they refuse to go to any level of government for help with anything. It makes them easier to exploit.

@zenheathen @GottaLaff
This is also a big reason they want to force local law enforcement into helping enforce immigration laws. Most police departments that refuse to work with ICE aren't doing it because they're a bunch of liberals; they want immigrants to feel safe reporting crime and testifying in court. That's exactly what Trump and his minions want to stop.

@zenheathen @GottaLaff tho large scale gas chambers will be harder to do with all the satellite data. They will rely on disease and malnutrition, if we aren't successful in stopping this horror.

@jayalane I imagine most satellites looking at Cuba are American.

@GottaLaff

@GottaLaff what about all the overflow? Presumably more private prisons

@GottaLaff That's a moneyhole. They can put a few people in GTMO but it's a stupid idea. This is indeed just a shiny thing that'll fizzle out. The camps will be in the U.S. & owned by private prison contractors that Congress members own stock in.

@GottaLaff @Nonya_Bidniss

This would be his second bite at that apple. Trump proposed the same thing, including imprisoning children there, during his first reign - er, administration.

Anybody recall what happened to that idea?

@ginaintheburg @GottaLaff
According to WAPO it may be holding migrants right now. washingtonpost.com/world/2025/

Has it been used to house migrants before?

U.S. government agencies and private contractors have used facilities at Guantánamo Bay to detain asylum seekers and refugees for several decades, rights groups say

In 1994, for instance, President Bill Clinton resumed the previous administration’s use of the Guantánamo base for processing Haitian refugees and later ordered Cuban asylum seekers caught at sea to be held on the base. Later that same year, the facility’s migrant population totaled 45,000, according to a government report.

Last year, the International Refugee Assistance Project released a report accusing the U.S.-run Migrant Operations Center at Guantánamo Bay, or GMOC, of detaining migrants fleeing Haiti, Cuba and other Caribbean countries throughout its history. Many of those refugees are intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard at sea and then “detained indefinitely in prison-like conditions without access to the outside world,” often “with little to no transparency or accountability,” the report said.

“These refugees are forced to endure this treatment until a third country agrees to accept them for resettlement, even if they have family in the United States,” it said, adding that the process can take years.

IRAP accused the U.S. government of subjecting detained migrants to “a multitude of health and human rights violations,” including “substandard living conditions, abusive guards and forced medical procedures including forcibly administering birth control.”

It’s unclear how many migrants and refugees are currently detained at GMOC, the IRAP said.

@Nonya_Bidniss @GottaLaff

Thank you so much for this comprehensive, albeit terrible, history & analysis.

I thought migrants were already being held at Guantanamo, but couldn't find a quick verification on Google. Maybe worded my query incorrectly, searching for Gitmo instead of Guantanamo.

@ginaintheburg Maybe because it's pronounced gitmo but it's written GTMO. I used Guantanamo. @GottaLaff

@Nonya_Bidniss @GottaLaff

Good to know! I just did a search on GTMO and came up with the WaPo story (tho the title & first paragraphs didn't feature GTMO at all - just Guantanamo Bay):

It wasn't the top return, but it was up there. It's all been published since Trump 2.0, but then that's Google for you.

@Nonya_Bidniss @GottaLaff Can’t use the internees for slave labor from Gitmo. Of course the camps will be in the USA.

@hal_pomeranz @Nonya_Bidniss @GottaLaff And I can see it now. The private prisons in the US will have a banner at the entrance saying, “Work Makes You Free” 🤦‍♂️

@Nonya_Bidniss @GottaLaff what’s worse than congress people having stock in prison for profit is many judges own stock there, too.
Often they put the stocks in a family members name to evade detection.
“Corruption they name is America”

@Nonya_Bidniss @GottaLaff yep, it’s not really even relevant where they put the concentration camps, their existence anywhere is the problem.

@Nonya_Bidniss @GottaLaff hate to break it to you:
Those in the US will be for the ones that can work in the field, classic 13th amendment legalised slavery.

Gitmo will be for political opponents that you want to keep isolated.

Did you know that, back in the day, Dachau was the first camp they built?

@GottaLaff With what money? It’s just like the wall all over again. Where is he stealing the money from?

@GottaLaff
away from prying eyes of people who would support human rights and demonstrate against this.

@GottaLaff Sometimes I get confused on what to try follow: human rights atrocities outside of the protection of US laws committed by the US government or US government contractors; fast-track US government contracts that happen outside the normal bidding process because "it's an emergency" and wastes way more money than the're "efficiency" saves; kickbacks that occur (usually through a third party or country) but make their way back to the decider in chief. 🤷‍♂️ #grift #uspolitics #Politics

@GottaLaff A better location than Greenland for sure…

@GottaLaff
Rwanda will take your migrants for a mere 715 million GBP. The UK can even offer up an unemployed millionaire to lead the programme.

@GottaLaff Sheesh... with all the empty space in Texas and a governor who'd bend the knee if it didn't mean falling off his chair, there's ZERO valid reason to put a Camp Orange franchise at gitmo.

@GottaLaff They are building g-d concentration camps out of the public eye … but are also brazenly announcing it for all to see. 🤬

@GottaLaff

Trump's speech said there already was one, a 30,000-bed facility, one that "not that many people know about, but it's there."

Trump seems to describe it the way he does "move-in ready" condos he hasn't started building yet. Let me know when someone finds the congressional authorization for spending the money needed for a 30,000--bed facility to be used for any purpose.

@GottaLaff with all the things POTUS is able to do only with EO, why have they bothered to pay for a Senate and the House of Representatives until now? 🤷

@zii_0 Some of the EOs are meaningless.

Also, he's doing everything he can to take power FROM Congress.
