@GottaLaff They should have to prove that they have the semblance of an education also and that they were taught empathy as children.

@GottaLaff For some reason I thought it was settled law (enacted + precedent) that access to public education could not be restricted based on citizenship status.

I wish I could do more to resist; punishing minors like this is cruel.

@GottaLaff It always amuses me* All these states with barely any population, nowhere near a border, with the worst or near-worst standards (education/health/income/etc) amongst all the states are always pulling bullshit like this.

Why? Because it lets them blame Black/Brown/Other people for their own dumbasses. America *LOVES* to be racist AF.

*makes me angry

@octothorpe @GottaLaff They *have* to attack marginalized groups. Non-marginalized groups have the power to fight back.

@GottaLaff I thought rightwingers wanted local control of schools, as in control from the residents of the school district in question. The state board violates this principle which they have sworn is their utmost concern. Local parents should be determining school policy, they tell us again and again and again.

@GottaLaff

I doubt that any white folks will have to prove citizenship.

@GottaLaff Oklahoma really is the worst and I say that not only having been born there but also having cousins/aunts & uncles and other relatives there

Also for those wondering why they’re bothering. 2 reasons 1. Indigenous people are a big part of the population in OK and it will undoubtedly hit them hard. 2. Any state with oil drilling or farming has migrant work.

@Npars01 libraries in conservative states have been under attack. As I understand it there is already censorship in public libraries in OK -kids are not able to access material about their bodies or any age appropriate books about homosexuality and obviously in FL we’ve seen widespread attacks on libraries. Thanks for all this!

@Npars01

Somehow unbelievable sick. So glad not having to experiencing this.

@Npars01 @Danetteb

There's always been discussion about libraries. If they hadn't been invented already, there's no way they would get invented and funded right now.

But that feels really quaint.

It's the gateway drug to the more complex thing:

Now, fascists want to destroy libraries and truth and knowledge. They were never agnostic about libraries. They were always hostile. And it's going to get very shitty. Very soon.

@Maxfieldripken @Npars01 @Danetteb
...When the opposite is actually what we need, not just for books, but as a model for all digital #IntellectualProperty!
All of digital IP could be registered in a virtual online "Library", so that ALL of it is accessible to EVERYone, at a basic rate*... so that ALL creatives get paid! That is not happening now.

All to enrich billionaire donors like Walmart & Amazon.

@GottaLaff So, they would deny schooling to children who are citizens because of their parents? Wow.

@GottaLaff
Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1947

1. Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.
...

@GottaLaff
...2. Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.
3. Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children."
