Siiigghhhh.
“The Senate on Saturday approved the nomination of South Dakota Gov. Kristi #Noem (R) to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), putting her at the center of an administration focused heavily on immigration.
The
@GottaLaff
@GottaLaff O_o ugh #ty for enduring this for us tho.
@GottaLaff They should be forcing Vance to break the tie as MUCH as possible.
@Unlikelylass EXACTLY.
@GottaLaff who were the Dems that voted for Noem? So much for "resistance"
@TotalSonic They’re doing that with others too. Hegseth was the exception. It’s nuts. They don’t need our votes, so why do that??
It's a bit shocking actually. What's in it for Dems?
@LexyCameron They inexplicably think compromising will help. Instead they're normalizing fascism. @TotalSonic
@GottaLaff @LexyCameron - I guess some think "let's reward Trump with a show of support for nominating someone that is just bad in the old school GOP way" (e.g. which they all did for Rubio), rather than nominating someone who is totally bat shit crazy and morally repugnant. But seems to me nearly every nominee crosses beyond "normal bad" and should just be given a nay regardless. Sadly folks like Sanders and Fetterman have also expressed possibly voting Yea on RFK Jr and Tulsi Gabbard.
@TotalSonic @LexyCameron Noem is no Rubio.
@GottaLaff @LexyCameron - Rubio is all for the complete unbridled destruction of Palestinians though. That alone should have gotten him nay votes from the D Senators (and I'm saying that as a Jewish-American).
@TotalSonic Oh totally. I was responding to "establishment GOP" vs. "hard MAGA GOP" @LexyCameron
@GottaLaff @TotalSonic @LexyCameron
Thanks for clarifying. At this point "establishment GOP" = "hard MAGA".. and MAGA has metastasized into the Democratic party.
#fetterman
#blueMaga
@mikeblake @TotalSonic @LexyCameron I wouldn’t go that far.
It’s not much of a distinction (establishment vs MAGA) since they all support Trump, but Rubio at least has some experience to fall back on vs say, Hegseth, and is slightly less radical.
As for “Blue MAGA”… they’re not full MAGA, so let’s not do that. Fetterman is doing some weird stuff, but I don’t think he’s MAGA. Not sure what he’s up to.
@GottaLaff @TotalSonic @LexyCameron
One of many lessons from the election is that Democrats wont win by cowtowing to fascists. We need to elevate progressives and jettison the zionists. By the way AOC is active on bluesky lately
https://bsky.app/profile/aoc.bsky.social
@mikeblake I know, I follow her. @TotalSonic @LexyCameron
@GottaLaff @TotalSonic @LexyCameron Cool cool, appreciate you, just realized you changed instances!
@mikeblake Yep! I’m liking it here! @TotalSonic @LexyCameron
I agree. They should be as intransigent as the Republicans have been.
According to The Hill those six Democrats who voted for Noem were:
John Fetterman (Pa.)
Tim Kaine (Va.)
Andy Kim (N.J.)
Gary Peters (Mich.)
Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.)
Elissa Slotkin (Mich.)
What the hell??!
@TotalSonic @GottaLaff
There has been some variety, although a few are consistently awful (looking at you, Fetterman, MI, and NH!)
In this case, I found this:
Democratic Sens. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Tim Kaine of Virginia, Andy Kim of New Jersey, Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, Raphael Warnock of Georgia, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Gary Peters of Michigan and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire joined all Republicans in voting to break a filibuster on Noem’s nomination.
@TotalSonic @GottaLaff
And wtf, Andy Kim? Warnock? It’s the randos that always surprise me. Why vote for Noem? On another vote it was Ossoff that was an odd yes.
@lucybeahere @TotalSonic @GottaLaff fetterman was one of the biggest disappointments
@coldfish @lucybeahere @GottaLaff - I now regret sending Fetterman a little bit of cash for his campaign, but given that the alternative was Dr. Oz, it made way more sense at the time. The "two party system" has definitely been part of the reason our governance has raced to the bottom though, when even the supposed "good guys" turn out to be utter mediocrities.
@coldfish He makes my blood boil. I sent him the standard "please vote no on Hedgseth" email when the vote was approaching. He wrote back, saying he wanted to remind me that republicans have a majority and that no amount of "pearl clutching" by democrats will change that. Egad. Constituents writing their senators is now pearl clutching? I guess I'd better look through my jewelry box...
@lucybeahere @TotalSonic @GottaLaff I will settle for no less than TOTAL OBSTRUCTION. This is not my party anymore.
@lucybeahere @TotalSonic @GottaLaff Yeah, Hassan and Shaheen are my Senators. I am not happy.
@slotrak @TotalSonic @GottaLaff
Living in NH for 20 years drove me crazy. I was in a liberal area, fortunately, but the state elected officials see sawed between Hassan and Shaheen types to outright idiots like Craig Benson.
She's not gonna treat any human being kinder than she treated her own dog.
@FranceskaMann @GottaLaff
Oh Franceska, I love your avi.
@GottaLaff A lot of voters are losing faith in the Democratic parties ability or even willingness to fight this administration and fight for their interests. I’m hearing more and more disaffection - especially among younger voters (which just means younger than me) but not only among younger voters.
Democrats shat on progressives long and enthusiastically. We tried to tell Democrats fascism was coming as our voices were silenced. They made fun of us, flipped us off and hated us with more vitriol they ever had for Republicans. So here we are.
@FranceskaMann @StephanieMoore This is literally true.
I have a bunch of sources who are operatives, consultants, staff, former members of Congress, etc. who know the party inside out and are still well connected.
Jeffries is no friend of Progressives, btw.
@GottaLaff @FranceskaMann yes and yes - we have friends and colleagues across various areas as well and some family involved in organizing in Virginia. I had hoped the GOP would splinter first, but both parties are fracturing and the Dems may do so more visibly first (for the GOP, it’s more like they’re leaking around the edges).
It would be nice to have an actual progressive party.
@StephanieMoore It's mandatory. @FranceskaMann
@GottaLaff @FranceskaMann I’m glad (relieved?) to hear it said more emphatically.
This is what's curious to me. There were more nonvoters this time around who didn't care about what was going to go down if/when that bastard got back into office, and somehow we magically got the worst case scenario. If these people were so disaffected they didn't fight on election day, I suppose one way to interpret that is that "the people" are fine with Project 2025.
@GottaLaff so Democrats voted for her? The animal abuser?
@GottaLaff to say that Noem wants to solve things in a bi partisan way os to admit that she appreciates dem votes to perform racism with cover.
@GottaLaff Someone on staff should whisper in her ear about misbehaving untrained illegal canine immigrants. Ought to keep her busy.
@GottaLaff - So, do Democrats in Congress not understand how to be the Opposition Party?
@steveo1049 @GottaLaff only AOC, apparently.
@GottaLaff
I hope she doesn't take us all to the landfill and shoot us.
@gdinwiddie @GottaLaff - Doubt it; she'd delegate.
@jmax @GottaLaff
What? And miss all the fun?
@gdinwiddie @GottaLaff - Oh, no. But she wouldn't do the _work_. I suspect she's annoyed someone else didn't take care of it for her last time.
"Six Democrats voted with Republicans to confirm Noem: Sens. John Fetterman (Pa.), Tim Kaine (Va.), Andy Kim (N.J.), Gary Peters (Mich.), Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.) and Elissa Slotkin (Mich.)."
Help Wanted: Six people who won't vote for Nazis. Position is long-term temporary.
@darwinwoodka @GottaLaff Since the #DNC has exactly zero spine, it's past time to let them know that ANY vote along Rep pushed measure means being primaried, by popular vote and funding.
@faraiwe @darwinwoodka @GottaLaff the DNC is voting for a new leader, so double check that statement after Feb 12th
@manvsxerox @darwinwoodka @GottaLaff they must learn this now, so the vote goes according to that.
They desperately need new, young, progressive leadership, or they are doomed to become even more irrelevant.
@faraiwe @darwinwoodka @GottaLaff okay, do you live in a state that this senator is from? If so, contact them and tell them you will support a primary opponent.
