Mastodon can be so weird. My feeds are filled with lots of posts complaining about how and why people are doing mastodon wrong, how they should post, why they should change their server, shaming people for forgetting to add text to an image, calling people who haven’t deleted their twitter accounts Nazis, now followed by posts ripping on people trying Threads….all followed by posts wondering why people don’t seem to enjoy Mastodon as much as they think they should. I just can’t imagine why
I like Mastodon, don’t get me wrong. But a lot folks on here who write these kinds of posts also talk about how Mastodon is superior because it isn’t as mean as Twitter, but I’ve seen quite a bit of meanness, it’s just wearing different clothing. Just my .02.
@DrPsyBuffy The meanness is definitely still here.
I will say one plus is that (dependent on your instance) the overt stuff is handled.
Meanness exists in both places for sure. Masto has the option for instances with far more robust moderation than Twitter.
@DrPsyBuffy I've found that Masto more than other social media type places requires effort to curate the space.
Finding a good instance, following (and muting) the right words/hashtags, etc.
For me it has the potential to be a lot better than elsewhere because the tools to make it better are in my hands. But the default experience is really not so different from elsewhere imho.
@DrPsyBuffy Ya but I have way more faith in mastodon dealing with a hate problem than I do a big tech social media platform doing so.
@DrPsyBuffy The one common thing about the social networks that it shares with small towns is that people love to complain, especially if they can quickly identify an out-group.
It's like some weird malfunction we have.
@DrPsyBuffy Yep. I saw a conversation yesterday where a person said ‘Hey, I don’t like the idea of using Threads myself, but I can see the appeal of it for lots of people.’
A fella replied to him that those people are stupid and empathizing with them was stupid (paraphrased). That’s a special kind of mean. It isn’t the outwardly horrible stuff you can find on Twitter, but it is absolutely crappy behavior.
@raddude12 I suspect that the convo you’re referencing here is the one that inspired my post. Sadly, it seems it’s one of many right now.
@DrPsyBuffy The only thing helpful about those conversations is that it lets me know who to block because I don’t want to deal with that sort of behavior in the future.
@DrPsyBuffy However, folks on Mastodon are mean in a morally superior way!
Very true.
And there are huge sites (one with 50k users) that do not moderate #childporn, among other things.
We users on big instances don't notice that, b/c they were defederated by most.
@DrPsyBuffy
People are mean, It's the internet. Mastodon is good because there's no algorithm. Threads is awful because it's ALL algorithm.
Turns out lots of people want that uncontrolled feed of people they don't follow, so... cool? Have fun. Not my job to tell them how to social media.
@DrPsyBuffy it provokes a different reaction (at least in me), the lecturing, that other more direct aggro.
I remember when the first big twitter wave arrived, it was the worst, I think. Like most, I had people popping up to tell me what I was doing wrong because I just don't get the culture.
Listen here, you little shit, I've been here for 15 years.
@DrPsyBuffy
With all the bird replacements, I see a whole lot of back-patting, and Mastodon is quite smug. The bit we learned is (a) don’t sell your personal data for a free lunch, and (b) building social networks means continuously re-solving the problem of moderation and defending the community. Mastodon solves the first I hope, but the second isn’t solved by tech.
@DrPsyBuffy , I have only been here since last October, when the 1st wave left the bird app. Yes, there are bad actors here. I have found the occasional white supremist group with their own servers supporting that. What I find far less of is people demanding that they know how hateful you are, and jumping to insults. It is really strange these days to see that happen. A couple weeks ago it did happen. I mentioned in a random thread why I would not / did not vote for Hillary and was verbally assaulted. It was just like the old Twitter days. But what is daily there is monthly here.
@DrPsyBuffy I was going to say something mean, and try to include a mention of clothing in it. But... no. Can't do it. This _is_ Mastodon (well, Fediverse--whatever).
@DrPsyBuffy
Mastodon only shows you posts from the accounts and hashtags you're following. If you're unhappy with what you're seeing, you might want to review the recent posts from those people. Then you can unfollow the people whose posts are turning you off.
That being said, there is an old saying about group dynamics. "There's one a$$hole in every group." You may have to become a hermit if you want to avoid mean people completely.
@GailCBull That is true on the home timeline, but I venture into federated land now and then because I’m a curious person. My comment was an observation. Not a cry for help. That’s it.
@DrPsyBuffy@mstdn.social I have a mastodon.social account, but it's dead. I prefer Firefish.social because it's busier and the people here are fascinating. I wish there were more painters, but I get plenty of art from my feed on what's now being called X. The Fediverse still has a long way to go imho. I have profiles on Mastodon
