Bellingcat contributor Ollie Ballinger developed a tool to estimate damage in Ukraine. He has now repurposed the tool to estimate the number of damaged buildings and the likely affected population in a given area within the Gaza Strip. https://www.bellingcat.com/resources/2023/11/15/a-new-tool-allows-researchers-to-track-damage-in-gaza/?utm_source=mastodon
Amid the ongoing bombing of the Gaza Strip by the Israel Defense Forces, many researchers have attempted to track and quantify both the damage done to the territory’s infrastructure as well as the displacement of the local population.
This new tool developed by Ollie Ballinger allows users to see a probability of how many buildings have been damaged in a selected area. The same methodology can be found in other tools assessing damage in Ukraine and Turkey, both of which can be accessed here https://oballinger.github.io/PWTT/
The damage is mapped by measuring the change in the intensity of the radar waves reflected back to the Sentinel-1 satellite before and after October 10, 2023 from a given area, adjusted for how noisy the signal is in both periods.
You can find the link to the tool itself in the guide here: https://www.bellingcat.com/resources/2023/11/15/a-new-tool-allows-researchers-to-track-damage-in-gaza/?utm_source=mastodon
