An open source/self hosted and federated Tik-Tok alternative, made by @pixelfed has just successfully tested federation!
If you applied to join, expect an invite within the next week!
(We will be open sourcing the mobile app and backend later this summer)
@starshine @dansup @pixelfed come on now, there’s no need to be like that
@wiredfire @dansup @pixelfed the entire fediverse is built on free software. i think it’s completely reasonable to expect a new server to be open source from the start, rather than it being an afterthought. especially seeing as servers are intended to be self-hosted.
@starshine @dansup @pixelfed I disagree. Dansup, or any other dev, owes us absolutely nothing and especially not when they’re producing work for free (not even paid with ads or personal data). They should be free to work however they want. If you’re not comfortable with how a project is being handled you can either choose not to engage with it or get busy coding your own take with your standards.
@wiredfire @dansup @pixelfed you assume that i actually care about building a federated tiktok clone i don’t
like i said, basically the entire network is free software (minus a few centralized services that a lot of instances block anyway), and it’s really fucking weird that a new project from an established developer is starting out as closed source
@starshine @dansup @pixelfed If you don’t care why are you commenting on this at all..?
@wiredfire @dansup @pixelfed i don’t care about making a project like this. but something that is already federating should be open source
@starshine @dansup @pixelfed there’s no “should” - that’s a key fundamental of the whole approach.
Also as you say this is an established dev.. that absolutely buys him some credit and patience to see where this goes.
But as before if you’re not comfortable with that, and have no interest in making positive contributions, what help is your snark here..?
@starshine @dansup @pixelfed @wiredfire lol yeah so youre just arguing in bad faith just to be a worm. good look! not at all completely expected or anything lmfaooo
open source isnt worth being your religion. why be dogmatic about something so trivial? just try and enjoy things. you might like it!
