What is happening on RedNote is WILD. I'm having conversations with health care workers in China comparing and sharing experiences. Americans are asking Russian users about Russian social media apps. There is a shared earnest desire for cultural exchange that is transcending politics. I have no impression it will be allowed to last but it's really refreshing.

@Hunter It is what the Internet was supposed to be at the first place, isn't it? What's sad is that more and more often people treat instances of such cultural exchange as some kind of miracle rather than a norm.

@spanin @Hunter
Let's do our best to keep the internet international. I never noticed how limited my feeds had gotten. Back in my anime forum days, I had lots of Indonesian, European, and South American friends and I don't see as much variety anymore.

@Rozzychan @spanin @Hunter Corporate social media intentionally segregated feed/circles by jurisdiction & language both (1) out of a misguided belief their users are xenophobic and would be offended at seeing things in other languages or national/cultural contexts, and (2) for the sake of differentiating advertising & tracking/profiling markets.

I don't buy the xenophobia theory much. it's backwards: the xenophobia is promoted through the isolation.

the isolation was a lot more about creating propaganda silos, and promoting xenophobia is part of it: making people under your control ignorant about others makes it easier to shape their minds.

IIRC I've talked a little about this in https://www.fsfla.org/~lxoliva/#santa

@spanin @Hunter Across such big language barriers & politically-motivated-isolation barriers, it's never really happened before.
