Jair #Bolsonaro supporters storm #Brazil’s presidential palace and supreme court

> Extremists have refused to accept Lula’s victory in presidential election last year
> Hundreds of hardcore supporters of Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro have stormed the country’s congress, presidential palace and supreme court in a stunning security breach that was immediately compared to the 6 January invasion of the US Capitol by followers of Donald Trump in 2021.
Important to note that it looks like Jair #Bolsonaro is in Florida:

So this coup attempt might be happening with Bolsonaro out of the country. Which makes me hopeful it will not succeed.
It would be good to verify that though.
Also, Lula has already been sworn in, and #Bolsonaro had acknowledged electoral defeat

As analogies are inevitably drawn with the January 6 Capitol attack, there are crucial differences that we should all keep in mind.
Any Brazilian journalists tooting in English we should all follow to stay informed at the source, and not through the filters and lenses of international media?
@rysiek The distinctions seem irrelevant to me They still seek to overturn a legal election. Does anything else really matter?
@shoq these distinctions matter a great deal to how hard it is for them to achieve their goals.
@rysiek Sure, but I guess I don't much care how hard it is for them to actually overturn elections, as much as I care that It's becoming far too easy for bad actors to whip them up enough to try. It's disruptive and toxic for democracy whether whether they succeed or fail.
@shoq "overturning elections" is just the means to an end, "staying in power."
And as far as "staying in power" is concerned, it's much easier to overturn a contested election before it gets certified, than to organize a full-blown coup once it has been certified.
Agreed on toxicity to democracy, of course!
@rysiek True, but I guess the latter scares me far more than the former.
@rysiek Maybe @Ursalzona can recommend us one?
@laescude @rysiek @allthebrazilianpolitics is monitoring everything in English
@Ursalzona Obrigada e torcendo pelo Brasil como sempre!
@rysiek
I already reached out to a Brazilian friend and wait for response.
@rysiek Yes, Bolsonaro is in Florida, but could return in no time if the Brazilian military would back the terrorists aka protestors and send him a plane.
@rysiek Can the US ever stop letting deposed dictators come and live here without consequences? Batista got to live out the rest of his life in the US in comfort. I don’t want Bolsonaro in my country **at all.** #BolsonaroDeposedDictator #Brazil #dictators
@schoolingdiana @rysiek yet still we believe the propaganda that the US is on the side of the people...
He's in my *city* and it feels so gross.
@rysiek It will not succeed. Those terrorists are just vandalizing everything. But this is infuriating nonetheless.
@nunesgh good to hear, and also sad to hear.
Hope this is done and over soon…
@rysiek I presume that DeSantis can quickly round up a direct flight to Brasilia at a moments notice.
Fascist seditionists are all the same sort of drek.
@rysiek
I'm Brazilian and I'm really very tired of those idiots
