For the past year+, I've been using #Duolingo to keep my basic French and Spanish #language skills up, as well as to learn Italian. In anticipation of this potential Basel, Switzerland trip next month, I'm trying to learn some German (since Duolingo does not offer the local Swiss German dialect).
It's not going well. Not sure why, but I'm having the worst time with vocabulary. I can be polite & order a beer, but that's about it so far.
@nicolewolverton The Swiss dialect of German is tough! I had some high school/college level German when I went a few years ago (I visited Zurich, Bern, Meiringen, and Thun on the way to a conference). I was thanking my lucky stars that most everyone I encountered spoke at least some English and that I’d brushed up on Duolingo.
@Kkondrlik If I'm having this much trouble with German, I can imagine how much Swiss German would be! I'm told most people in Basel do speak English.... I just feel bad for making them have to. :(
