For an overcast, rainy approach to Vietnam's Hạ Long Bay in 2018. The famous limestone islands were still impressive and quite eerie in the quiet gloom of the morning. The cloud cover burned off during the day and we saw more of them later.

We're at sea, in a bay filled with limestone islands. The water is flat and grey, reflecting the heavy clouds that smother the sky. Some of the nearer, lumpy islands of rock show some detail of rough sides topped with dense vegetation but most of the dozens of islands we can see are little more than silhouettes becoming paler with distance, their shapes like rows of rotted teeth. A cargo ship sits at anchor in the middle of view. It has a long body, dark blue in colour, and a rectangular bridge block at its aft on the left in a light yellow. There is no sign of cargo on its deck but there are four tall cranes equally-spaced and ready to assist loading and unloading.
