A family friend has been stopped by ICE twice in recent days. He’s Navajo.
ICE arrested a kid’s dad in front of their school in Loveland yesterday.
ICE took a mom, her 3 year old, and the kid’s grandmother into custody at a mall after they were overheard speaking Spanish. It was only some time later that they allowed the adults to show the documents they were carrying proving them to be US citizens.
Joe Public has no idea how quickly the economy is about to get fucked by this idiocy.
@mcnado How long before enemies of Trump are deported by "accident"?
We need to defund ICE. Defund this administration.
@davids7 defunding requires Congress to act. I advocate for more urgent action. Sand in the gears is fine. You see ICE around, make them know they’re being watched, are unwelcome in your town, and make them have to work hard for every arrest. “Who are you? Why are you here? Why do you think your target is here illegally? Show me your badge!”. They can tell you to get fucked, but it will grind on their psyche.
@Hex @ciggysmokebringer @mcnado @davids7
And Internet Archive has a copy of it. The Internet Archive contains the repository of most US manuals, particularly military manuals covering a remarkable range of topics, not just combat. If I recall correctly, you’ll find topics covering basic trade skills like plumbing or carpentry.
@GhostOnTheHalfShell @Hex @ciggysmokebringer @mcnado @davids7
yeah i always recommend those military manuals, the one on Survival Escape and Evasion is fun one
@mcnado me googling: "are ICE agents armed?"
@aojiaohu the answer is yes.
Two questions I think Americans might consider:
1. What is the number of angry citizens demanding answers from an agent that will make this bullshit require more extensive mission planning to safely execute?
2. Does ICE stop and harass citizens who are openly exerting their 2A rights? You know, like walking around with an AR-15.
@mcnado There are a ton of things we can all do but we need to get everyone moving. The first step is hardest for most people. We need to reach millions & help them take it. Want to help organize #AfternoonNotesToAmerica ? People can add more than one note, they should be short & legible but always at the same time. It’s inexpensive & easy, the MSM can’t ignore it, no #COVID risk & the GOP can’t stop it. One great note would be “Know Your Rights”
US citizens don’t even have such documents to readily prove citizenship.
Your driver’s license might not matter.
Assuming you drive and have a license.
There is also some discussion about taxing dual citizens at higher rate.
@Call151 @mcnado this is the point everyone seems to be missing.
Anyone can be disappeared as a an "illegal" because all ICE has to do is ignore your documents. There's no oversight. American citizens were already deported *last time*. If you are within 100 miles of the US border, you can be disappeared to a camp and you have to prove you're legal (and they have to care enough to listen, and not want to just get rid of you).
This is why I elected to renew my passport, which would have expired early this year. I thought it was a good idea to make sure I had a freshly minted one before 2025.
I need to remind myself that I probably should carry the damn thing on me. Even though let’s just say, my features would not make me generally a target for immigration. Too pasty white.
If you have an accent and they hear you, that’s all the motivation they need. I half jokingly say I haven’t gone to Arizona for this reason.
I have a stupid question... How the hell does anyone _prove_ their citizenship in this country?
I have a Social Security card that is frayed, torn, and signed with the hand writing of an eight year old. I have a State issued drivers license.
That's it. That's all I'd have on me if I was picked up by ICE. Is that enough?
@401matthall @mcnado It's plenty--IF you look like the guy in your pfp.
IOW the whole point is to allow for racialized discrimination. Probably eventually they would like to propose some kind of national ID, whose implementation would be subject to the same discrimination.
@401matthall You look white. I think you are safe
@Tooden @401matthall @mcnado
BUT, go ahead and order a couple copies of your birth certificate. MAGA is *proposing* a federal law requiring a birth cert or passport to vote.
Depending on your birth state, copies can cost $20-$40 dollars and take 2-4 weeks to arrive. (Order at least 2.)
Tell you friends & family to do the same.
@SheriSwears
> MAGA is *proposing* a federal law requiring a birth cert or passport to vote
Worth noting that this is a violation of the presumption of innocence; it presumes you guilty of election fraud until you prove otherwise by presenting ID. So probably a violation of the Bill of Rights and thus unconstitutional.
I presume you've seen the reporting by Greg Palast on MAGA's vigilante vote challenges allowing them to win the election?
@strypey @SheriSwears @Tooden @401matthall @mcnado
When a “post-constitutional” ideologue is manning the federal Office of Management and Budget, the SCOTUS is pot-committed to a New Apostolic Reformation, and the Democratic Party has no balls or a spine, quoting laws to men with swords is a choice.
@paninid
> quoting laws to men with swords is a choice
It may or may not be tactically useful to quote them at present, but I think it *is* important to know them, talk about them, and remember them. Otherwise you're implicitly consenting to the suspension of the rule of law.
@strypey @SheriSwears @Tooden @401matthall @mcnado
I agree!
“Our Constitution is a remarkable, beautiful gift. But it’s really just a piece of parchment. It has no power on its own. We, the people, give it power. We, the people, give it meaning.”
- Barack Obama, Farewell Address
The neofeudal reactionaries want to burn down the parchment. Not me. They will, if we let them. Our #institutions will not save us.
@paninid
> Our institutions will not save us
Agreed. Institutions are just networks of people organised according to agreed protocols. In and of themselves they have no agency, and can't save anyone. But people, using institutions? Maybe. It's at least one set of tactics.
@paninid @strypey @SheriSwears @Tooden @401matthall @mcnado
So Pompey was Sulla‘s boy? And I was some amount of the history between Marius and Sula. At least by wiki page, that Civil War and Sulla‘s dictatorship set the stage for the successor generation which include our friend carnifax and his opponent one Gaius Julius Caesar.
@paninid @strypey @SheriSwears @Tooden @401matthall @mcnado
Gee, social unrest based on debt. And absolutely recurring problem, in antiquity, right?
People don’t like debt peonage.
“Dirt:the erosion of civilization” might be fascinating because it has a lot of interesting things to say about civilizations and their relationship to soil.
also Michael Hudson for his own remarkable work on credit in antiquity.
The two make for an interesting pairing.
@GhostOnTheHalfShell
> also Michael Hudson for his own remarkable work on credit in antiquity
Kind of self-evident I guess, but David Graeber's Debt has plenty of relevant commentary on this history too.
@strypey @GhostOnTheHalfShell @SheriSwears @Tooden @401matthall @mcnado
Henry George has entered the chat and he was right.
@SheriSwears @Tooden @401matthall @mcnado
Best to move quickly while there are still people working in the government offices.
Maybe set up a go fund me for people who can't afford the document to apply for funding to get documents.
@SheriSwears @Tooden @401matthall @mcnado birth certificates won't help older married women with a different last name to their birth one. Similar issue to some trans people getting new documents.
Correct, they'll likely need a copy of their marriage certificate or a legal decree to verify a name change. It's a ridiculous hassle/hardship, but if you're worried about proving who you are, it's what needs to be done (for the time being).
@Tooden @401matthall @mcnado basically. Otherwise you better have some thorough documentation on you or you might find yourself in gitmo. Because if ICE decides you aren’t a citizen you aren’t going to get an opportunity to contest that before you’re shoved on a plane.
@daedalean @Tooden @401matthall @mcnado
Recently renewed my and husband's passports. Paid extra for the little "card' version that can fit in a wallet. Portable citizenship proof.
@Opus42 @Tooden @401matthall @mcnado so fucked that you even have to.
@401matthall fun story — that’s actually the whole problem. A US birth certificate usually is adequate, and a passport or other Federal ID usually is supposed to suffice, BUT there are innumerable documented cases (going back decades, but including in the last week) of ICE agents claiming that they think the ID is fake and letting people sit in detention centers for hours or days while they dick around. They are a rogue agency with no accountability and toxic culture.
Given your features and name that’s good enough for them I suspect.
Hard to imagine that in a world a few months ago, having to worry about papers and, identification Wasn’t something we thought of unless we wanted to go buy beer and looked freshly out of high school.
@401matthall @mcnado get your REAL ID if you don’t have a passport, passcard, or Global Entry
@mcnado This is bad, that now us indigenous people are being stopped and questioned. I am part Kanaka Maoli - Native Hawaiian descent as well as Native American descent and I was asked to show my ID by ICE while in CA last weekend. Are they going to deport me to Hawaii, where I live? LOL, WTF is this country coming to.
@MakanaBoy @mcnado cuba, it would seem
@mcnado I’d get a lawyer.
@mcnado I swear to god I'm going to make this into a macro:
This is what the right voted for.
This is what the left failed to vote against.
@ShredderFeeder @mcnado let's not lose the wider context of voter suppression, purged rolls, gerrymandering, suspicious comments about voting machines in Pennsylvania (https://youtu.be/F9gCyRkpPe8?si=El8psq-3r14i1AUb). There's decades of Republican hard work to manufacture themselves an edge. It's not like in other countries where you spend five minutes on voting day putting a bit of paper in a box.
@mcnado The first thing Joe Public is going to notice is how comfortable they are in public now that they've forced all the non-white people to hide from them.
We're a deeply racist nation.
@mcnado im joe.. and i know
@mcnado law enforcement has always had a problem in attracting workplace psychopaths who use their position to abuse people for no reason other than the thrill of it. This new campaign must be heaven for them.
@mcnado for those who have an interest in monsters in the workplace, John Clarke’s Working with Monsters is an eye opener. I don’t think this sort of book dates as the situations are timeless. When you see the details it seems a lot of what we call narcissism could be more accurately described as workplace psychology.

@mcnado my mom is a public school teacher and said they literally had to train her on what to do if ice comes into her classroom. someone I follow named Christian Sherwood said a Trump supporter send him a cease and desist letter because he spoke out against Ice coming into his classroom. Oh but trump supporters is the party of “facts over feelings” yet they put feelings over facts if they send people cease and desist letters over it.
@mcnado they need to make their terror raids and arrests as visible as possible.
Every child at that school just found out there is no such thing as security. Their parents can reassure all they want. The lesson their child took away was terror.
Years ago a friend was picked up by ICE over a paperwork (on their end) mistake. His five-year-old witnessed it. For weeks she screamed when she saw a neighbor in her blue McDonald's uniform, terrified she was ICE coming for her daddy.
@mcnado the US is s fascist state now. Unbelievable.
@mcnado truly, fuck the economy. If that's all someone cares about, they'll be fine as long as detainees are forced into unpaid labor
Please don't talk about this as an economic issue. It's about human beings. People can't treat other people like that. The consequences are far worse than inflation.
@stevenbodzin I frame it that way because that is all voters give a fuck about. We’re here because people thought descending into oligarchy would be better for the economy.
