In the 15 years that I’ve been in medicine, this is the first time I’ve had a hospital put out a memo explaining how we deal with ICE. I previously worked at a very busy hospital in New Mexico.

@mcnado California hospitals are doing this as well.

@mcnado

The Gestapo was terrified of Cholera.
Health professionals who were helping folks escape death from the fascists were using Cholera to restrict access.
I got a feeling there will be a breakout of modern version thereof in US hospitals.

@n_dimension 4 years ago a deadly virus was killing people in droves and cops in the ER consistently refused to wear masks.

@mcnado

I'm pretty sure I've read a paper that gayness is transmitted by aerosol.
Turns your hair purple and makes you break out in empathy.
Those folks would NOT want that!

@n_dimension @mcnado Just say "fentanyl" loudly - their penis will fall right off like a frozen iguana dropping out of a tree and they'll faint dead away like a Victorian-era hysteric.

@WuMargaret as with any similar law enforcement inquiry, we are to ask them to remain in public areas, contact our admin on call and legal team, and not provide any information regarding patients we may or may not have present in our facility. In short, the hospital wants to stay the fuck out of the goon squad role.

@mcnado Thanks for responding. Glad you are not put in a position that conflicts with providing care. Is your hospital’s approach is pretty typical? I know nothing about this topic, but I am really interested.

@WuMargaret I suspect it is, mainly because there are significant legal pressures involved here. Even if current political winds might protect from prosecution under HIPAA, there are civil liabilities. There is also the issue that many staff might walk off the job.
