@kevinrns iRobot is insisting on same principals and they are facing same problems. Except their robots don't weigh 2 tons and drive among pedestrians and other cars at 50+ km/h...
Using LIDAR is such an obvious choice because it's physical based measurement of distance from things and doesn't need visual interpretation like cameras. If laser bounce is short, then something is physically close. Camera can't do that.

@kevinrns I was really impressed by the lidar equipped car.
@kevinrns my 2015 BMW I3 used a camera for adaptive cruise control. It used to brake suddenly for heavy rain, low sun directly in front, and for slow-moving bridges that pulled out in front of it.
