In case you missed it, StreetPass is a free open source web browser extension which helps you find accounts to follow on Mastodon:
After you've installed the extension, just use the web as normal. Your browser will start noticing if sites you visit have Mastodon accounts, and will make a list of these accounts.
(Owners of websites need to have a verified link to their site on their Mastodon profile. More info here: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account/)
StreetPass is by @tvler
@feditips@mstdn.social can I talk about actual StreetPass in a second and cry about Nintendo cutting off online services for the Wii U and 3DS which partially affects StreetPass
either way the actual extension is super cool, although i haven't personally found it that useful yet
There's an initiative at @pretendo to replace Nintendo's online services on 3DS and Wii U with free open source unofficial ones.
@experiencer @feditips pretendo my friend!
Yup! Just had same thought, and they are on here too at @pretendo
@feditips@mstdn.social @jame@wetdry.world @pretendo@mastodon.pretendo.network iirc I suggested Pretendo to be added to FediFollows lol
I don't have my Wii U modded plus rn on Pretendo you can't play my beloved Splatoon in public lobbies
@elight @feditips @derek this is definitely an interesting idea. the way streetpass works right now is based on the assumption that browser extensions and notifications live in your toolbar and are easily accessible, which isn’t the case for iOS. I think the “StreetPass list” and the notification UI should probably exist as an app on your homescreen, which requires a lot of research and work to get right. It's definitely a super interesting idea that I hope to get to tho
@elight yes thats the exact tool I’m using right now to package the desktop safari extension for the Mac App store! For iOS, the unknown engineering work would be creating an actual native app (along with the extension)
@tvler Thank you for the plugin. Also, greatly appreciate your attention to factor methods into files.
@elight I'm gonna try to focus this conversation into this github discussion if you're interested! https://github.com/tvler/streetpass/discussions/36
The "How to get verified" sites tend to neglect an important fact. The verification mechanism limits itself to sites something like less than 2mb. My favourite method for web content starts at 2mb. So I had to make a special page for verification.
Basically, there's no real reason for someone to visit my verification site. And I suspect that I'm not alone.
I suspect that you could browse all day and not collect any interesting sites/accounts.
At the time I played with it various ways. My recollection is that it didn't want to "eat" any page that was more than 2mb, no matter where you put the header.
It's probably not worth it to try again. After all the effort, the verification only appears on your profile page, and not next to your posts.
