FediTips has moved!

You can use one account to follow people across the Fediverse, you don't need to sign up on multiple servers.

Having said that, a lot of people do use multiple accounts (or "alts") if they want to post themed content. For example, some have alt accounts just for food content.

All Mastodon apps support being signed in on multiple accounts, and let you switch between accounts easily.

If you do use alt accounts, keep them on separate servers so that a problem on one doesn't take them all down.

@feditips sorry, accross the Fediverse would mean across Mastodon, Lemmy, FunkWhale, PixelFed, etc? maybe it depends on each service and their integrations...?

because i have a Mastodon account and a Lemmy account, and maybe i could merge them.

@cristalcommons

For the sake of keeping it straightforward and within character limits, I kept the original post simple.

Yeah, it depends on integrations.

Generally you can follow accounts on other Fediverse platforms from microblogging services like Mastodon. However, some features may require a native account.

For example, if you watch/comment/like/subscribe to PeerTube channels then your Mastodon account is enough, but if you want to upload you will need an actual PeerTube account.

@feditips no, no, your post is perfect 🙌 sorry if i made you think i found it imcomplete or something.

in fact i am learning a lot thanks to you. i think it was thanks to your website that i learnt how to 'merge' my old Mastodon account into this one.

but i didn't realize you have so many if my questions already replied on the FAQ. sorry for asking redundant questions haha 🙏

now i get it. thank you for your reply and all your work overall ☺️

@cristalcommons

No worries! Just wanted to acknowledge your post is totally correct about it being a bit more complicated! 👍

Feel free to ask questions, don't worry if it's been answered already 😃

@feditips aa, okay haha
thank you for your patience! ☺️🙏

yes, i have yet to read the most advanced non-dev sections of the FAQ because they look very interesting to me.

it's so wonderful that you wrote them so well organized. with this and FediGarden it's impossible to get lost.

so thank you! 😊🙌

@cristalcommons You can follow Lemmy communities straight from Mastodon and get all the posts (usually only future posts from the moment you followed that Lemmy community are displayed, not the past ones).

You can comment them as well, and boost them. If you star them, they are upvoted. If you want to post, simply create a normal post with the community tagged (e.g.: @community@servername). Your first line of the post will be used as the title, so make sure you do not add the tag there, otherwise it will be displayed weirdly.

Of course, as @feditips said, there are some limitations. In this specific case:

  • You cannot format your text. You cannot bold it, italicize it, strike-through etc.
  • You cannot downvote posts on servers that allow it (this shouldn't be a problem for e.g. Beehaw, but still, Beehaw and other servers disabling the downvote button are not all Lemmy).
  • As your first line will be used as the title, you cannot decide if that sentence will be part of the actual post or not.

E.g.: Let's say you post the following:

"Today I had a beautiful day at the beach.

I went there with my fiancé and we had a wonderful time. It's the first time I've ever been in your country, and I must say I was impressed by..."

That post will be displayed as:

Title: Today I had a beautiful day at the beach.

Content: "Today I had a beautiful day at the beach.

I went there with my fiancé and we had a wonderful time. It's the first time I've ever been in your country, and I must say I was impressed by..."

If you can live by with these limitations, then you can clearly do that 😁

@petrescatraian @feditips woah, thank you so much for the explanation, pal! 😊

the visual formatting considerations when tagging or typing the first sentence are very interesting.

also, the different features allowed or not allowed depending on the server. it will take me a bit to make myself a mental table with the compatibilities haha

but yes, thank you very much for willingly taking your time to type this elaborated post! 🙌

@cristalcommons You're welcome! 😁

Edit: there are also some test communities (e.g. over at @test or @test for you to play around with the features).

@feditips

@feditips
And yet, for many people, the process of finding and following people on other servers is confusing and cumbersome.

@dancingtreefrog

There are ways to make it easier, I've done a complete list here:

fedi.tips/how-do-i-find-accoun

This place is structured very differently to centralised services, so if you've only ever used centralised services it may take a bit of time to get used to that different structure.

Except for the Mastodon PWA. Or I don't know how. 🥺

@smurthys

You just log in on the different servers' websites and keep them open in different tabs. You can switch between them by switching tabs.

@feditips had not thought of that approach. I'll try it out. 🙏

@ColinTheMathmo

Your chart is ready, and can be found here:

solipsys.co.uk/Chartodon/11102

Things may have changed since I started compiling that, and some things may have been inaccessible.

In particular, the very nature of the fediverse means some toots may never have made it to my instance, in which case I can't see them, and can't include them.

The chart will eventually be deleted, so if you'd like to keep it, make sure you download a copy.

@feditips I personally find it confusing when people use multiple accounts. Who do I reply too? Although I can see having one as a backup.

@mike

You reply to the account that posted whatever you're replying to? It will happen automatically if you click reply.

A good use for alts are themes, for example I've got lots of accounts which are each for a specific purposs: @feditips for tips, @FediFollows for follow recommendations, @FediVideo for interesting videos on the Fediverse etc.

@feditips @FediFollows @FediVideo Ya but what if they post using that account and then don't check it. It's problematic Imo
