Yeah, the setting should be there regardless of whether you use the default interface or advanced interface.
It's in Preferences > Post Layout > Crop Images
I've attached a screenshot of it. Is this option there on your preferences?
I'm wondering if this problem is caused by changes they made recently on mastodon.social which remove the cropping. It means some images can look way too big if they are very tall-shaped images.

Am I just not seeing it at all? I don't seem to have a post layout option?
@LizEllisPhD @LutherBlissett13 @Stoat
Oh dear, looks like Mastodon's latest version (which your server mastodon.social is testing) has removed this option.
This is not a good thing at all... hopefully they reverse this change. They sometimes test things on mastodon.social first to check if there are problems.

I expect he's too busy these days to respond to this, but I hope @Gargron is aware of this issue.
I guess for now I just have to block all images because the web browser is unusable now.
@LizEllisPhD @LutherBlissett13 @Stoat @Gargron
It's as bad as that?
Could you show me a screenshot of the problem, just in case it isn't due to the new changes?
@feditips @LutherBlissett13 @Stoat @Gargron
OK, so I think since my initial gripe and me responding to notifications this morning they fixed it. I can't find the original example image I used, but other images seem to be displaying normally now. Clearly I just needed to be patient. Thank you everyone though :)
No problem, this is definitely a flawed update and I hope they fix it!
Glad to hear the current images are slightly less frustrating though.
