@feditips complete newbie here. I have handles of several friends already on Mtsdn but am having trouble finding them. Is that because they’re on different servers? I thought that via Federation, it wouldn’t matter what server you or your friends reside on. Thanks!

@justcallmatt It shouldn’t matter, but you’ll need to specify their full address if they’re on another server. Think email address - @name@server.com, rather than just @name.

@Serenus @justcallmatt

Yeah, exactly. Ask them their full address, it's displayed just below their names on their profile. It will look like this:

@ user @ server

You can paste this into the search box to make the account appear.

@feditips @Serenus thank you that worked. Now to fix the next problem. I can login to my account via browser but not with the app.

@justcallmatt

Hmm... try logging in with a third party app? (There's a list at joinmastodon.org/apps)

I'm not saying you have to use a different app, just curious to see if the same error happens there too.

@feditips I was able to login with the Mastoot app on my phone. I didn't see a way to specify my server (mas.to) in the regular Mastodon app

FediTips has moved!

@justcallmatt

You click the "Log in" button, and then type your server's name into the search box (the one with the magnifying glass 🔍 ).

@feditips bingo, I’m in! I’m still getting used to the whole multi-server ecosystem. Thank you so much!
