There's a particular flavor of liberalism that depends on being ignorant of the things you opine about. I was more racist when I was younger -- I lived in Pomona with a bunch of black people and they frequently annoyed me. I was *also* more intolerant of poor white people, and I've gotten better about that too.
Outside of occasional charity work, I don't deal with poor people on a day to day basis any longer. The black people I associate with regularly are successful. It's a lot easier to be a nice liberal when people aren't pissing you off with their traumas, associated with poverty and discrimination. But it's not particularly praiseworthy.
