The Alchemist

Introducing one of my creations.

For me, this glaze whispers ancient coppery secrets. Can you imagine being the first potter to see this colour after firing clay wares over 5000 years ago?

Whether it was intentional exploration, or a happy accident, we will never know!

@alchemistsstudio One of my favorite things to learn through my tea ceremony sensei is how many iconic techniques and pieces were happy accidents. I think we like to think of so many of these works as being the intentional control of master hands. They often are, of course, but they're just as often the result of clever screwing around. Makes sense, given the one-use handmade kilns and hard-to-control wood fires of the era.

@roadriverrail Very insightful comment. I very much agree. I imagine many discoveries were accidents. Maybe some Sumerian potter was trying to make a clear glaze, but some copper was nearby and got mixed in?
I also think that's the charm of historical and unconventional firings. The sheer delight of a happy accident.
As I say, raku, clay, other techniques have tendencies that one can learn and play with. It's all part of the joy. It's the understanding of those tendencies that takes skill

@cavyherd turns out i'm already following them; definitely the right stuff. thanks for thinking of me.

@jonsinger

I kinda figured that might be up your alley.

@alchemistsstudio
Never mind the green one, how for this one?
