"Take sides," in my view, does not mean one must "hate" the oppressor; rather, it means that one must unambiguously support the principle that the act of oppression is not to be tolerated. Whether you "like" an individual or not is not pertinent. What is pertinent here is that we unambiguously refuse to tolerate the act of oppression.

@YoWatShiinaEsq We are doing taking sides and standing up against oppression here in Ontario today, as our Provincial government has abrogated the right of unions to strike and to bargain. This must stop. Our democracy is at risk!
