I’m about to head out to the great state of Colorado for a family vacation in the Rocky Mountains. I’ll be off the grid a lot so I won’t be on Mastodon very much. Have a great week everyone and see you on the other side!
Whoa! After just one hour in the Rocky #Mountains, CO, today, I encountered a herd of elk! The herd was grazing a half mile from where I was staying and I saw them while out taking a walk. This one seemed to pose for me! #MountainMonday #PhotoMonday #WildlifePhotography #wildlife #hiking #backpacking #nature #NaturePhotography #photography
It’s a winter wonderland here in the Rockies after a night of snowfall. Hiked along a stream yesterday with picturesque views of the valley walls on each side of the trail— may return to that trail again today but with snowshoes.

Went snowshoeing today on that fresh layer of snow that fell overnight. Taught a six-year-old family member how to snowshoe. Just before we headed out, this fine four-legged creature posed outside our window. Saw lots of small hoof prints in the snow (upper left pic)— deer or elk? Having a blast!!

Returned earlier today from spending time with my family in the Rocky Mountains. Sole purpose was to enjoy each other’s company— mission accomplished! Back to sea level again. Check out this runway that I landed on today at Logan Airport (Boston). The runway ends at the ocean and at less than 20’ elevation— much lower and it would be a water landing! #Colorado #mountains #ocean #NewEngland #landscape #photography #LandscapePhotography
Happy #MountainMonday! These are "the" Flatirons-- a group of tilted flat-faced rock formations in the Rocky #Mountains, near Boulder, #Colorado (there are many other flatirons elsewhere). We passed them last week on one of our excursions. A "bit" colder than the last time I was here-- hiked around the base of the Flatirons in 90+ deg (F) heat a couple of years ago! #PhotoMonday #hiking #backpacking #nature #NaturePhotography #landscape #photography #LandscapePhotography #GetOutside
I am still fondly reflecting on the wonderful family gathering I was at last week in the Rocky #Mountains, #Colorado. One of the highlights was giving this six year old his first lesson in #snowshoeing. He was very excited to be on this adventure! Amazing how well he did, especially using adult-sized snowshoes. Next stop-- White Mountains, New Hampshire!! #FootpathFriday #snow #ice #hiking #backpacking #nature #NaturePhotography #landscape #photography #LandscapePhotography #GetOutside
@hikingdude Thanks, Franz. Will do!
@TimKStanton
I'm so glad you're getting a real Colorado experience!
Here are things from my neck of the woods here in CO. The mountains are being shy still
@va Thanks, Virginia! Most of my trips here are in the fall. So wonderful to experience the snow here. Nice view from where you are!
@TimKStanton
Enjoy it fully!
@hikingdude Yeah, it was my first time snowshoeing this winter. A start!
@TimKStanton
Yay!!! This looks so beautiful and fun! Love the shot of the Mule Deer too!
@va Yeah, I’m having a great time! Snowshoed right out of the cabin. And, there’s so much wildlife living in this river valley that we’re staying at. Saw a herd of about 40 elk here on the first day. And every day we see about five deer around the cabin. And then there are the turkeys.
@TimKStanton
Oh, to be surrounded by nature and creatures is so joyous!
@TimKStanton
And I'm SO happy for you and your family that you get this time here!
@va Thank you, Virginia! This is a very special week!
@gecole Glad to be back snowshoeing!
@TimKStanton It's fun when you get to see such angles. I had a similar experience once in SF.
@TimKStanton Sydney (Oz) is similar but lies lower (doesn’t take much for future difficulties).
@JamesAshburnerCBR I suppose they would have to shut down the runway if there was a storm surge.
@TimKStanton
Hey welcome back Tim!
Great to know that you had a good time!
@hikingdude Thanks, Franz!
@TimKStanton Holy crap, it looks like that pilot really f-d up. Given the angle of the photo, that has to be runway 27. This will give you an idea of how close that landing was.
@gcvsa I’ve flown in there many times— it is impressive how close we get to the water. It always feels like it’s going to be a water landing.
@TimKStanton I'm in Vermont, so it's easier for me to take Amtrak and fly out of Philly than it is for me to get to Boston, and cheaper than going to Newark.
@gcvsa Sounds good. Except for the exciting near-water landing in Boston, I don’t like that airport. Prefer Providence Airport when the flights are available.
@TimKStanton at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport you land below sea level.
@TimKStanton San Francisco is like that, too.
@mlanger I just now checked the runway specs for SFO— one of the runways is as low as 5.6’ elevation!
@TimKStanton
Ah gorgeous! So happy you had a real Colorado experience with a snowstorm and all!
@va Yeah, like magic, we arrived and departed with clear sunny skies and the snowstorm happened in the middle of the trip. Couldn’t have been better timing. I have normally visited Colorado in the summer/fall. So nice to have the winter experience!
@TimKStanton
Perfect! I love when things align like that :)
@rythur Nice! What a great place to live near!
So far, so good :-)
I like being able to hike out the front door. Excellent stuff, mate.
@TimKStanton wonderful. Never too young to enjoy the wilds!
@elperronegro Always amazing to see young children learn so quickly (and, they don't have too far to fall when they slip!).
@TimKStanton
Ooh, something to try with my grands if I get the opportunity!
@EllenInEdmonton Highly recommend! Safe, simple, and fun!
@TimKStanton
And I happen to have 2 pairs of snowshoes on hand. The trick is getting together on a day with the combo of great snow and nice weather!
@EllenInEdmonton Indeed. The snow fell right in the middle of this trip, which was perfect timing!
@TimKStanton Aww this is so great, Tim! Looks like a beautiful time!!
@TishaPaints
Absolutely wonderful!
@TimKStanton
How wonderful! I'm sure the snowshoes were an adjustment, especially being so big. Hopefully he had fun though!
Yes, he had a great time! Since the snowshoes were so big for him, I told him to walk with his legs far apart as if he was riding a horse and to pump his knees high as if he was marching in a band. He had fun imagining those things while we headed into the wilderness. We eventually needed to turn around because he said he was tired— first time this energetic child has made such a declaration!
