I really hope people can hear me on this.
When people say that Trump is joking about this or that, Trump doesn’t joke. He literally cannot joke.
When he says he’s ‘joking’, it’s simply something he flew up the flag pole to see if it would fly, but it didn’t. So then he says he’s joking.
But he’s never joking.
A true joke takes something Trump doesn’t have.
So when he says he was joking, or the people around him say he’s just making a joke, it is always a way to cover for a failure to gauge the situation, or an inability to follow through, or a miscalculation of what his base will tolerate.
It’s always a way of refusing responsibility for his own words. The one thing it never is is an actual joke.

1) Say something outrageous.
2) Walk it back or claim you were joking when people push back.
3) Double down.

@Remittancegirl and the “I don’t know anything about it” which he used before but this time is his catch phrase. He not only is not responsible but he doesn’t even have to make a comment because he doesn’t “know” about it.
@Remittancegirl and trump really does tell us exactly what he's going to do, but for some reason people don't believe him. even after he does it, they still act shocked that he did it ... even though he said he would.
@arrrg @Remittancegirl The best I've been able to figure on this is that people believe that thieves or evil people only exist if they see them dressed in a black hoodie walking around hunched with eyes darting around furtively.
Yet in all of human history, all the most evil people operated right out in the open.
Since Trump doesn't wear a black hoodie, when he claims that it's a presidential act to try to lead a coup to take over the government people accept it because he said it.

Totally agree. I do think (hope) it means something if we say "Trump enjoys no broad support" (e.g. to somehow obtaining Greenland).
He *does* enjoy broad support for e.g. his racism, so we have plenty of real work to do.

@Remittancegirl Seriously, how do people not get this? The man is a blatant sociopath -- there is no room for doubt even from the point of view of a layman.
Some sociopaths can recognize the pattern of a joke and attempt to emulate it. Trump is not among them. Even then it wouldn't actually be joking but would be performed for a specific manipulative purpose.
@Remittancegirl Trump is textbook NPD, and I have known several, and not a single one of them ever understood humor. They knew how to laugh at the expense of others and how to temper themselves around people they needed to impress, but none of them actually ever knew how to tell a joke. They would often spout some insane view of theirs, and use the "I'm joking! Hello!" type of excuse after they both failed to get a laugh and got concerned looks from their audience.

"I'm just joking" is also a classic narcisstic personality disorder tactic and behavior, deployed when caught out or called upon some of the shitty things they say.

Trump, like all trolls and most privileged boys, is not joking, but testing the bounds of how far they can go and get away with.
