“The Conservative national campaign director told media outlets Tuesday their journalists won't be allowed to travel with leader Pierre #Poilievre on his campaign plane and bus during the upcoming election, ending a decades-old tradition of reporters embedding with a prospective candidate to lead the country.” #Canada

2/ "The Liberals and NDP told media outlets they will allow journalists to travel with their leaders.
"Why does Poilievre's team feel like they need to hide him from the media and Canadians in the next federal election? He's the wrong choice at the wrong time," a Liberal Party spot told CBC News"
3/ "Poilievre has had a fractious relationship with some media outlets, including CBC News, and has denounced some of the journalists that make up the Parliamentary Press Gallery.
He has vowed to defund CBC, if elected."
@NorCalWineLady Trumpy.
@NorCalWineLady But true. I'm terrified about it
@northernlights @GottaLaff
CPC figures if they can keep him away from any nonpartisan media, he has a much better chance of getting derailed by a question he can’t answer — or for which the answer will turn certain groups against him. He has zero answers to any substantive questions.
And he’s Trumpy.
@KimberlyN In the article it says he'll allow local coverage. How well does that work in Canada? @northernlights
@GottaLaff @KimberlyN @northernlights All the little papers are owned by the conservative giants; all the little tv stations are owned by mostly conservative networks. Coverage can largely be dictated, probably, or underfunded so they can keep their deeply unpopular dickhead mostly hidden.
Maybe they're keeping press off the plane/bus so that they don't get to peek at his "image maintenance regimen".
@GottaLaff @KimberlyN @northernlights If you've got one main person from a given outlet traveling with the campaign, and that person doesn't get one question answered for three days, or can't get one specific question answered at all, that can easily become part of their coverage. If it's different people in every town, it's harder to track the evasiveness.
@ZenHeathen @GottaLaff @KimberlyN @northernlights
Local reporters should work together to prevent evasiveness. One of the toughest car crash interviews ever was UK prime minister Liz Truss when she was interviewed by several locals who co-ordinated their questioning:
It helped to doom her government, and they won an award for this co-ordination:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-65050364
(Of course... this might not help if the locals are owned by conservatives... )
@FediThing @GottaLaff @KimberlyN @northernlights I've been saying it for years. If one reporter asks a question, and they evade or don't answer, the next reporter should either repeat the question or ask "why won't you answer that question?" But media being what it is, it's competitive, and journalists don't/won't work together as much now as they used to.
@ZenHeathen @GottaLaff @KimberlyN @northernlights
We can only hope more reporters and proprietors see it as a vocation in the future (but I guess part of that would be more of us readers funding them properly).
@FediThing @ZenHeathen @GottaLaff @KimberlyN
Not only readers; there needs to be investment and advertising.
We're lucky to have a McClatchy paper in my community. You can subscribe to a McClatchy paper digitally and you get a subscription TO ALL OF THE DIGITAL EDITIONS NATIONWIDE!
@cassandracorvid @ZenHeathen @GottaLaff @northernlights
“Both McClatchy and accelerate360 are owned by Chatham Asset Management, a New Jersey-based hedge fund with other assets in journalism and communications.”Miami Herald, Aug 2, 2024
Chatham Asset Management also owns PostMedia, the RW news company that owns most local newspapers in . These papers have been shilling for Poilievre for years. I read an article this morning about taxation changes that was a thinly veiled campaign ad for PP.
@KimberlyN @cassandracorvid @ZenHeathen @GottaLaff
Ah, I see. Thank you, I expect I'll avoid McClatchy, despite its down-homie name.
We need to force the sale of Postmedia papers back into Canadian hands.
Agreed. As I was reading that tax article this morning in the Financial Post, I was thinking that it’s no wonder people whose news comes exclusively from PostMedia outlets have such a skewed view of Canada. There’s a lot of overt and covert disinformation/propaganda masquerading as real news on those sites, and unless ppl get out of that insular environment, they have NO idea they’re being manipulated.
Depends on the local media, eh?
In Whitehorse, it used to mean decent coverage and good questions. Our oldest paper and its successor both folded last year, so now we have a right-leaning weekly, an entertainment weekly, and the CBC.
We don’t have a lot of truly local media. So my guess is that’s code for “only RW outlets we like.”
This also means no one can observe what happens as they move around. Did they “seed” their local audiences with political operatives? Are the same faces showing up at a rally in Victoria one day, and Toronto the next? They have previously lied about conversations they’ve had with “local residents” that have been completely fabricated to sell their schtick.
@northernlights @GottaLaff
Probably Russian influence, and being complicit in their massive disinformation campaign on social media. He is in the same cabal as Trump, Putin, Harper, and Orban et. al. I'm sure.
@GottaLaff Seems he wants to remind everyone that he is Trump-lite.
@not2b I hope it's just "lite"
@GottaLaff USA is I hope providing a cautionary example for us to stay away from.
@JoBlakely I hope Canada is paying attention, really paying attention, to who PP is
@GottaLaff Unfortunately, many young Canadian men seem to really like him. @JoBlakely
@feisty_lemming @GottaLaff of course they do. And many are being groomed & recruited like an army. Like PP himself really.
@GottaLaff I don't know if the CPC fully understands how many communities depend on CBC Radio. Not sure about TV, but radio is important.
@StaceyCornelius @GottaLaff it’s literally the only free tv entertainment available if you are poor and it’s got great content that is heavy on Canadian culture. You’d think it representing Canada so well he’d appreciate it, celebrate it. But he hates it *because* it’s full of diversity and representation.
@JoBlakely I continue to be amazed at what they can accomplish in spite of their budget being cut, year after year.
@JoBlakely @StaceyCornelius @GottaLaff
There are also other public tv stations such as Knowledge Network in BC, TVO in Ontario which are also free, but depend on support by viewers - a lot like PBS in the US
@StephenRees @StaceyCornelius @GottaLaff
I totally forgot about tvo. Used to be a fan of Steve Paikin. Will add that to my list. Will check out knowledge network too. Thank you so much!
@JoBlakely Have you caught Saint-Pierre? I liked it a lot. I hope they can do a second season.
@StaceyCornelius
No. I am not a fan of crime dramas…but I know many are.
I loved Dinosaur though recently and the Best in miniature, and almost all the British shows, Catastrophe…
Going to watch Small Acheivable Goals next I think. Hope it’s good.
@StaceyCornelius Paul O’Grady’s For The Love Of Dogs got me through a good chunk of lockdown. What a balm.
@JoBlakely Oh I haven't seen that one. I'm glad to have Bake Off back.
@StaceyCornelius it’s so good. I love Escape to the chateau & the DIY one too. And I enjoyed both of Tiny Tempah’s shows extraordinary portraits and extraordinary extensions.
So many great shows really. Always able to find something I want to watch. Which is more than I can say for most of the big name platforms.
@GottaLaff It’s time for Poilievre to be called the political coward he is. “Conservatives will offer a party-controlled "feed" of Poilievre's announcements. -> If I don’t win, I’m taking my ball .. #cdnpoli https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/conservative-reporters-campaign-trail-1.7487068
YES YES YES!! This is the way to defeat fascists: expose them as weak. Their followers believe the #fascist leaders are strong - it's their main attraction. Take that away, and they lose their power.
Oooo. Ooooooo. I know!
Cuz that campaign trail is going to be laden with Convoyers that PP doesn't want in the media
@lowies You're the smartest kid in class!
@GottaLaff generous take: he's just such an uncharismatic dweeb that it's a tactical choice to keep eyes off him
more realistic take: he's got skellies in his closet and doesn't have the boastful charisma that certain people south of the border have which enables them to carry a cult of personality with strong support despite being an unqualified and likely compromised idiot
Jesus. Canada, aren't you paying attention down here?
@czarbucks I ask that every day
@GottaLaff At least you can watch it up close (or at a distance, depending on how you look at it)
@czarbucks Sort of. I guess.
Give him what he wants - no coverage. This is trump-lite kind of stuff that doesn't work in a huge part of Canada. So, just don't cover him or report what he is doing.
@LiamEgan He's going to get local coverage.
