How have we gotten to the point where this is an "extraordinary statement". Should it not be the norm that the Executive Branch or Legislative Branch cannot call for a removal of the Judicial Branch just because they disagree with them?

@NJWookie @GottaLaff The Constitution grants defendants the right of appeal. And it grants Congress the right of impeachment / conviction. "Norms" aren't something Trump has ever honored, and now he seems Hell-bent on dishonoring the Constitution.

In fact, in its ruling the Supreme Court actively stated that prosecution of Trump should continue for his crimes.

A whole lot of reporting gets that backwards. It does make for better headlines I guess.

He probably wants courts to maintain the force of law, even if only to weaponize them against the Democratic Party.

@GottaLaff I would not read Roberts's statements as anything but self serving. He is seeking to preserve his own office and the power that goes with it. His rulings belie any pretense for the respect for law as he gave the executive the power to be lawless and he is now dealing with the consequences which now are unsurprisingly not what he planned.

SCOTUS may be the best ally in preventing things from getting a lot worse.

@charly22 Oh in the US impeachment is not up to the judicial branch. It's a congressional process.

The Chief Justice is right to point out that such an impeachment would be inappropriate by existing norms and reasonable standards, but it's only an advisory opinion.

Constitutionally, Congress can impeach at will. It's purely up to them, and the Supreme Court has nothing to say about it.

This is consistent with what I read from legal opinions when the SC ruled that Trump was immune from prosecution in that instance. The details were that it wasn’t giving the president total freedom, it was giving the SC total freedom to make the final call on anything and everything. It was a power grab on the part of the SC, as many other rulings have done.
