“Amid the drama & bombast consuming the exec branch, Congress is preparing to act on legis that could restrict the vote for millions of eligible American citizens.

This would be worst voting bill to be passed by Congress in memory, probably ever. It would restrict millions of eligible citizens from registering. & in the clamor of the moment, it could slip through. Defenders of democracy need to stand up, stand firm, and fiercely call attention to its risks”

The Briefing · Restricting the Freedom to VoteBy Michael Waldman

@GottaLaff this is what I have been expecting- along with the immigrant & refugee bills

@Lazarou Yep, it never stopped

@GottaLaff Yep! CA threw away my registration last year when i moved because they couldn’t figure out what county I’m in. 🙄 I begged the Sec of State for help for months, only to be told to go to the county, but that was the problem. This will be a massively easy way to clusterfuck everything & make it however they want! We knew they would. 🤬

@GottaLaff No doubt Fetterman has already voted for it somehow.

@GottaLaff Passports are expensive! This bill sounds like a poll tax.

@tobie1 @GottaLaff Every other time I've seen the GOP propose ID requirements for voting, they've always included state driver's licenses and ID cards as valid forms of ID.

Requiring a passport, birth certificate, military ID, or state ID / driver's license is enough of a poll tax (and intentionally so). The states already presumably verify that people on the voter roles are citizens, so requiring physical proof of citizenship is an inconvenience and expense, and an obvious intimidation.

@GottaLaff I gotta believe that a lot of red state voters don’t have a passport or a certified copy of their birth certificate.

@GottaLaff

I do not have an American birth certificate. Instead because I was born to U.S. citizens on a military base in another country I had a Consular Report of Birth Abroad . Which was apparently lost sometime after my father died. And became a real problem when I wanted to apply for a passport. Oddly it never affected my time in the service I was drafted, went overseas with no problems at all.

It was needed when I wanted to get a passport so I went on a chase for months ( pre internet) to get one. Now it is easier. Go to this site.

If you are reading this and in a similar situation start now. I imagine even with the help this provides it will take time to get the important piece of paper.
