ok but it's kind of funny that american politicians think tiktok's a bigger national security concern than the incoming president

@ElleGray kind of >.<
@ElleGray
"National Security" is just code for money and power. Same with "protecting children"
@ElleGray
I haven't seen anyone say it's a bigger threat. I'd put it on the same level as X. Just as X is obligated to allow whatever lies & propaganda Musk wants to disseminate, TikTok is obligated by Chinese law to disseminate whatever lies & propaganda The Chinese government wants to put out. And China is less clumsy about it.
Damnedable thing about it is they don't really need to lie much. They just need to allow the things that the USA overton window forbids. The stuff that our delusional self-image has no room for just now.
It's less good than one might think, cause I've watched people go onto TikTok and next thing I know they're saying we need to tear down our entire system, which, I mean, let's watch what happens to the Americans as they do that live.
Back to you, Dan Rather.
@ElleGray I mean, politicians in general twist "National security" a lot.
@ElleGray I think they are fully aware, but they are also fully aware of how fucked they are if they go against the czar, so they opt to distract.
@ElleGray I truly think that the Tik Tok ban has more to do with silencing Gen Z than it does with China spying.
@ElleGray they know who their population really listens to!
A convicted felon cam't own a gun but he has access to nuclear launch codes.
@ElleGray I don't know what makes you think that. I firmly believe they think that Trump is the greater threat, but they don't have anything legal they can do about him. TikTok is the threat they can do something about.
@ElleGray RIGHT? also, if they’re worried about surveillance/privacy maybe clean up at home (Meta, Google, Apple, etc) before you start importing messes from the other side of the world.
@ElleGray Except he's going to take TikTok from the Chinese and give it to a fellow oilgarch.
@ElleGray
There's leverage over all the others, and the million dollar tributes demonstrate that.
@BlippyTheWonderSlug
@ElleGray he's a russian asset, right?
@ElleGray
A problem that originates with the American voters
@ElleGray - too true!
@ElleGray A part of me (foolishly) likes to think they are stil in a shock over what happened in November. I know I am.
