Some of my friends here know I have #migraines When I was w/ Kaiser they didn’t have neurologists to treat my migraines- they tried 3 different blood pressure medications & then it was we don’t know what your going to do. No denial of coverage just - that’s it. So sad. Take pain relief meds.
Which I did.
And then one day when I was getting my sumatriptan refilled, I overheard the pharmacist yell over the counter, “another refill? My god. She can’t take this much of this medication.”

So after I changed jobs I went on #UHC They weren’t bad at that time. I paid $50 a month and had a $15 copay- way lower than prev. I could see a specialist who worked magic on my migraines.
Today: UHC plan is way more expensive & they no longer covering everything. My dr has prescribed multiple medications that UHC has denied. The pharmacy works to find some workaround- they get my financials & see if I qualify. I survive #migraines no thanks to insurance companies #healthinsurace
@Danetteb I'm sorry.
@mfennvt I hate insurance so much. That’s why I supported Bernie. I was so damn mad when we only got the ADA under Obama and I still blame the moderate Dems (including our 2 here in CO) for not being willing to sign on to at least a single payer. #medicareforall is what we desperately need though
@Danetteb Agreed on all counts! That's one of the reasons I voted for Bernie, too. *cough*he would have won*cough* ;)
@Danetteb I had been taking the Ajovy shots for three years before I joined Kaiser. They technically say they don’t cover it, but I pushed and pushed for a neurology consult and the neurology nurse practitioner approved it. I pay $30 a month for it and when I say it changed my life, I am not being hyperbolic. I just wasn’t willing to take no for an answer. I told my doctor I don’t care what hoops we need to jump through, but I need you to tell me what they are and help me know what direction to jump in.
My daughter’s insurance won’t pay for the shots, but she started taking Topamax and that is helping her headaches but has some crappy side effects.
@chefraven I take Ajovy and topamax. I’ve been on it for a bit and not having great results but the dr wanted me to try it every 28 days for 3 months. I also tried giving myself the shot in a new spot this month. I am despairing of it but have 1 more month so we’ll see.
@Danetteb I do my stomach. It’s the least painful part. Interesting that you take both. I’ve never heard of that before.
@chefraven I just started in my stomach. I had thought it would be more painful but you’re right- far less painful.
I’ve been on topamax for about 12 years. I went off for a bit but went back on and now the dr says to stay on it while we see if Ajovy is even going to help.
I have a friend who is a 3 or 4 medications plus qulipta and still has frequent migraines. She’s in Canada and has good healthcare- migraines are rough
@Danetteb as soon as you’re done giving yourself the injection, put an ice pack on the site with a thin towel on top of your skin. It really helps too if you have any side effects like itchiness or swelling. I noticed that my stomach looks swollen for a few days almost like I’m slightly pregnant, which is kind of ridiculous because I’m 58. :-) When I first started taking it I used to get a really substantial reaction but not anymore.
I started 5 or 6 years ago (right after it came out) and I maybe have one headache a month. And the ones I do get, all I have to do is take the Zomig and it goes away.
