Árbol de jade en bonsái. La maceta es octogonal, con diseño espiralado, color mármol.

Aligustre en bonsái. La maceta es baja, color madera, y recuerda a un barril. Tiene algo de musgo.

Acebo en bonsái. Es muy pequeño, la maceta es circular, oscura con brillos metálicos. He dejado la base en raíz vista.

Repotted my Japanese Maple into a much larger pot. The goal is to thicken the trunk and turn it into a bonsai. Traditionally this would be planted in the ground. But, I had a spare whiskey barrel so I mixed up some soil by hand and put her on the deck. Now to wait ten years and I can start the bonsai process.

See y'all in 2035 if the world hasn't ended by then!

Preparando el bonsai de romero (he hecho trasplante de maceta de crecimiento a maceta de bonsai) casi me lo cargo. El tallo se ha doblado y parte del leño se ha resquebrajado. Espero que haya suficientes vasos conectados para que la herida suture sin que muera toda esa parte del arbolito. Así que lo he encintado con esparadrapo transpirable.

Si todo va bien, en un par de meses debería poder quitar el esparadrapo. Si la parte distal se va secando, habrá que cortar por lo sano y favorecer una ramificación baja. Afortunadamente hay ramas abajo. En la peor situación tendré que cambiar la planificación de la forma del bonsai.

Un bonsai de romero está creciendo en una maceta octogonal llena de musgo. A su alrededor hay varias plantas en macetas y contenedores, con la luz solar iluminando la escena.

A bonsai plant in a grey flat round pot about 2/3 meter tall. Four or five small branches spread to form clumps of miniature dark green leaves on both sides and top. What catches attention is the trunk, where there is a pale yellow/khaki band of bark that starts at the bottom and extends upward to the top. The bark on the left and right of the plant is brown, suggesting that light color is some kind of malformation or artifact that was selected for during the Bonsai training of he plant. The base of the plant is covered with moss and tiny light colored pebbles.

Last two #bonsai done!
I tried to repot the maple already a few days ago, but the soil was just one single hard clump, so I thought maybe it had not completely thawed yet from the -4°C that night before. When I tried again yesterday after continuous > 5°C, it was the same. Turns out: it was all roots… Maybe I didn't do a good enough job working the new soil into the roots last year…? So I pruned the root ball by about half.
The hawthorn was happy, just light root pruning was needed.

severely root-bound maple bonsai, basically all of the outside surface is roots, no visible signs of any soil in the lower half. It still holds the form of the old pot.

Maple bonsai on its bench, about 30 cm high in total. One lower branch has been tied down to the pot with string so it turns to grow a bit lower. The tree is still bare, showing off the structure of the branches and the silvery bark, with small green leaf buds at the tips of the branches already waiting to burst open.

Japanese maple clump almost fully leafed out. Look for the tiny flowers.

These three branches were air layered off the same landscape tree. When I removed from the landscape tree, I cut extra branch length and inserted them like dowels through holes drilled in plywood. Over the next three years, the roots above the plywood fused in a grow box. I cut off the branch stems and potted this up last year.

My tiny maple future #bonsai trees are waking up into their second year.

All three have survived the winter, although I feared one of them had died. Luckily, that wasn't the case.

Last year I started six #bonsai apple trees from seed. I was afraid that they would not survive overwintering, because winter dormancy can be rough on a tree even when it is healthy and allowed to thrive in its first year.

I am pleasantly surprised to find that five trees are definitely alive after a few days indoors.
