Adam Onza<p>Imagine if there was a circular <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/xiangqi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>xiangqi</span></a>. EG one side attacks from the land around a pond. (Which takes the place of the river) And the other side is on an island in the pond. I don't mean anything political by it, but it could be easily seen as political.🥶Imagine if various <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/boardgames" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>boardgames</span></a> were circular or cylinderical.🤔</p>
🇨🇦🇩🇪🇨🇳张殿李🇨🇳🇩🇪🇨🇦This is another puzzle that I found interesting, amusing, or just plain fiendishly difficult. Adam Onza<p>Bought potstickers, which seem like gyoza.🤔 Are they gyoza?</p><p>I also bought tools &amp; materials to make Xiangqi pieces. I did it before. They were pretty amateurish, but I'll do better. I'll be the biggest manufacturer of <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Xiangqi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Xiangqi</span></a> pieces for at least 5 miles.🕶️</p>
🇨🇦🇩🇪🇨🇳张殿李🇨🇳🇩🇪🇨🇦I have always enjoyed playing 象棋 (Xiàngqí, a.k.a. Chinese Chess). I find it a superior game, in terms of actual enjoyment, to Chess. But I suck at it. Which is weird because usually people hate doing things they're bad at.<br> <br> Recently I picked up a pair of books of endgame tactics. This is because SO said, and I quote, "While you're terrible at every phase of play, it is the very technical endgame that you suck at most."<br> <br> Isn't he a dear?<br> <br> Anyway, the result is that I'm plugging away in my very spare time at solving endgame puzzles and occasionally I find one that I think is interesting, amusing, or is just plain fiendishly difficult. I've decided to start sharing these. When I do I won't tell you if I found it interesting, amusing, or difficult because I don't want to embarrass myself.<br> <br> This is problem 89 from the books. Dominique Lorre<p>Mods are definitely coming to Caïssa Board, I've finally managed to send some content to Steam... Adam Onza<p>I read about mini <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/xiangqi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>xiangqi</span></a> on this site a long time ago, (with Alta Vista's translate , maybe?) but it seems different than I remember. <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20181010033853/http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown-Spade/8662/mi.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">web.archive.org/web/2018101003</span><span class="invisible">3853/http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown-Spade/8662/mi.html</span></a></p>
Adam Onza<p>I put my 2 <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/xiangqi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>xiangqi</span></a> sets together to try to figure out which pieces were which. The fancy set is pretty obvious, but the cheap set has hard to read calligraphy. It's quite a stretch of imagination to ID some pieces. Though it's probably quite easy, once you know.</p>
Adam Onza<p>The cheap <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/xiangqi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>xiangqi</span></a> set. The board is printed on very thin plastic, that seems to cling to surfaces, like cling film.🤔 It suits my desire for a cheap set, although the sides of the pieces are rounded. That seems like an extravagance. XD</p>
Dominique Lorre<p>This looks acceptable for Shogi, however I think Xiangqi might cause more problems because it has a river between the two sides.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/shogi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>shogi</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/xiangqi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>xiangqi</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gamedev" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gamedev</span></a></p>
Dominique Lorre<p>Caïssa Board is now broken again! I'm adding support for Shogi, Xiangqi and Capablanca chess, and since those are different board sizes than 8x8 everything will break, from the display to the database....</p><p>I believe this is the last breaking change I have to make before finalizing the app.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/chess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chess</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/shogi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>shogi</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/xiangqi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>xiangqi</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gamedev" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gamedev</span></a></p>

Too often portable sets are made cheaply of cheap materials. This is lovely: the bamboo tube is nicely crafted and sturdy, and the playing pieces are electroplated brass: very substantial. The board is fake suede, but I'm going to hunt around for a proper suede board to replace it.
🇨🇦🇩🇪🇨🇳张殿李🇨🇳🇩🇪🇨🇦I know someone who has an even more intense interest in historical Chinese board games than I do. He researches them and publishes recreations which range from mostly-guesswork to intensely accurate. This is one such game, a variant of Xiangqi that was quite popular many years ago (more popular than even the version that dominates today!) but which fell into disfavour over the centuries. It has the unusual property of playing from corner to corner instead of from edge to edge, giving it a very different strategic feel. <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/AncientChess?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#AncientChess</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/ChineseChess?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ChineseChess</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Xiangqi?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Xiangqi</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/WoJiaoQi?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#WoJiaoQi</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/HistoricalGaming?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#HistoricalGaming</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/History?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#History</a>
