Bishop-elect Michael Pham, a former refugee who recently became Pope Leo’s first bishop appointment, was among faith leaders to bear witness and support immigrants at their immigration court hearings on #WorldRefugeeDay last week.

No one was abducted that day. He said ICE agents “scattered and went away.”

On the occasion of #WorldRefugeeDay (June 20th), DW Data published a new piece that explains displacement (including a data repository).

Key insights:

Numbers are rising dramatically.

Most people are displaced internally.

Africa and the Middle East are most affected, but also parts of Europe.

90% of refugees come from only 10 countries.

New update from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition just now:
─────
On June 20, #WorldRefugeeDay, Palestinian climate campaigners, Search and Rescue workers, and civil society & activists launched The Madleen Declaration!

The Freedom Flotilla in the Mediterranean showed us clearly that border violence, environmental destruction, and the genocide in Palestine are all connected.

Civil society organisations and activists call for a transformative social, environmental and political alternative to a Mediterranean Sea torn apart by state, corporate, and neocolonial violence.

Together, we demand a shared home in which we all can thrive. In place of death and despair, we demand life and hope.

We couldn’t celebrate World Refugee Day. Not even Pride Month.

Ever since the South Sudan government told all queer refugees to leave the camp without any support, we’ve been living in fear. No protection, no shelter, just uncertainty and silence.

We are LGBTQ+ refugees abandoned and forgotten. Please don’t forget us.

> After administering Mass at a downtown church, Pham lead a group of local Catholic leaders and Imam Taha Hassane of the Islamic Center of San Diego to observe proceedings at the city’s federal immigration court, escort people going to their court hearings and to “stand in solidarity with migrants who are making their court appearances” on World Refugee Day, according to a press release.

> “Our presence made a difference,” Santorosa said, quoting an immigration lawyer saying their client was given more time to prepare for another hearing.
> Any other day, said a local activist, two to four immigrants would be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and taken away in vans operated by private prison CoreCivic.

“Bishop Pham, himself a Vietnamese refugee as a child, said ICE agents were ‘standing there covered with masks as we walked toward the courtroom. Eventually the … agents kind of scattered and went away. No wonder people come in fear.’” timesofsandiego.com/life/2025/ #WorldRefugeeDay

“‘Like the story of Moses and Exodus, the Red Sea parted,’ said observer Scott Reid of the immigrant-aiding San Diego Organizing Project.

Said another observer: ‘We’ve never seen the hallways cleared out so quickly.’” #WorldRefugeeDay
