@EllenInEdmonton Yeah, that drama was a slog. I should have just dropped it.
Wooden is the right word, no chemistry what so ever between the leads.

I would say that the direction for Welcome to Samdal-Ri was less than inspired, and the location on Jeju-Do was the star of that show. JCW's character often seemed wooden to me, even though he's been amazing in other shows. Also, Shin Hye-sun seems to be an actor whose main facial expression is a kind of pained squint, so I have a hard time seeing her as a romantic lead.
Kim Mi Kyung was excellent, of course!

@commonst @EllenInEdmonton @ShaulaEvans … another reason I had a hard time getting through Ep 1 was Ji Chang Wook as I didn't connect with him at all in Welcome to Samdal-ri… where as it happens he reunited with Kim Mi Kyung (who was very good).
I’m so busy with work these days, but on Sunday, I finished “Welcome to Samdal-ri” and liked it very much!
I think they (the authors) have had some good ideas like Jeju, the haenyeos, and the meteorological agency and put these together to create a drama that is so beautiful, “light”, and pleasant. I’m sorry I didn’t discover it sooner.
Oh, and Shin Hye-sun is so adorable as always! (but I also appreciated the two “sisters”, Shin Dong-mi and Kang Mi-na)
@ericg @s1m0n4 @sirsean
Oh, I agree with that! It's quite pleasant in many ways and I won't stop watching. I just think that it's lacking in a cohesive and engaging plot. I had a similar feeling about #WelcomeToSamdalRi.
#kdrama
@s1m0n4 Agreed. And #ItsOkayToNotBeOkay and #ADailyDoseOfSunshine both did FAR better with #MentalHeal storylines. Like I said, I'm enjoying watching cute people be cute together but it's an extremely bland story, similar to #WelcomeToSamdalRi.
They may both be Netflix productions, which tend to be geared more towards western tastes, without all of the weird loveliness that makes #kdrama so much fun.

I definitely loved #TwentyFiveTwentyOne but the OP wants a drama that's "low tension", which is perfectly fair at certain points in one's life. I found #WelcomeToSamdalRi to be very low tension, to the point that I found it somewhat dull in parts. It's not yet finished, but I think that #DoctorSlump is also fairly low tension. Most of the dramas crank our emotions up several notches! #kdrama
I decided to not finish #welcometosamdalri last night, but went to bed and started #Siddhartha #HermannHesse which is not a light hearted bedtime read - but if #Namjoon can, so can I. Then woke up this morning to a poem on Weverse from our great leader - on his own journey... #Seollal

Last month I explored the music of Kim Kwang Seok because of #welcometowaikiki2 Now I'm listening to Cho Yong Pil obviously because of #welcometosamdalri - going back to 1972 #kdrama
Amusingly after talking about #jeju this morning I got to the episode which shows the effects of tourism on the islands beauty spots!!!
Morning!
Not the first #kdrama I've watched set in #Jeju - as well as reading about it/ documentaries - but because of #welcometosamdalri I was looking at more photos ( with morning coffee) while listening to this album ( one song is in the drama when the Haenyon dive ) - there's a tangerine farm/ a Camellia forest/ a Van Gogh gallery... As well as the coast. I so want to visit SK, more than any foreign place I've ever considered ( I am not well travelled)
Awake..for a while, it's now 5am #uk I got up, made hot chocolate, finished watching episode 8 #kdrama #welcometosamdalri - I wonder if I can get back to sleep now?

(2023 - 16 1:10 eps)
Raised together in a village on Jeju island, the leads' romance is inevitable, but for drama reasons, they are torn apart. At 1st this seemed very flat. Although there are some great actors, there wasn't enough depth to the characters & the FL wasn't very likable.
The writing could have been better, but the side stories eventually worked to support the main story & gave lessons about needing & accepting help from family, friends, & village. OK romance - best friends in love instead of passionate lovers, which fits the story. Some side stories could have been better - problems were instantly resolved with a couple of sentences.
Jeju is beautiful. Diving is interesting. Kim Mi Kyung is fabulous, as always. The 2 sisters are cute & fun, & the little girl is just the best! Not the drama I thought it would be, but a decent watch.
I can now concentrate on the rest of #welcometosamdalri which I've been racing through #kdrama
Although currently I seem to accidentally be watching #BTS instead of going to bed.
When I finished sewing I hopped back to #welcometosamdalri where of course there's trauma like #RainDogs - it's just a happier sort of trauma #kdrama #BritishDrama
#kdrama confusion
I'm still watching #forecastingloveandweather however, husband has quite got into this !! For weather & unlikely love story.
So we abandoned #taleoftheninetailed as something to watch together.
Meanwhile he watched most of #thebrotherssun without me, but that's fine ( not kdrama)
So: he's out at ukulele night, I've started #welcometosamdalri - more weather forecasting! More Jeju Island! But it's hot, and sunny, and the sea is blue... Which was very needed this evening
Welcome to Samdalri Overall Thoughts
I am going to miss #WelcomeToSamdalRi! One of my recent favourite #KDramas. The themes of loss, grief and mothers, really hit a nerve for me. Mixed with the feel-good mood though, it's also been healing. #Netflix
So, here in #YEG, we've had a serious cold snap since Thursday, with temps dropping below -40 for the last 2 days. Therefore, I've been revelling in the warmth and comfort of the Great Indoors for a few days now. Plenty of #kdrama, including the following shows:
#ExtraOrdinaryYou: completed
#UncontrollablyFond: completed
#AlchemyOfSouls: completed after several weeks of watchparties
#MyDemon: 1 week to finish
#WelcomeToSamdalRi: 1 week to finish
Started: #Moving
I saw this “bro code” again in relation to relationship/courtship; this time because of the story in #WelcomeToSamdalri #웰컴투삼달리.
Basically, the “bro code” states that you shouldn't court a girl or confess your feelings (even if you don't plan on courting her) because your friend (or some stranger) is courting her (or maybe in a relationship already).
When they're pressed to explain why they believe in this “bro code”, it eventually comes down to “[social] stigma”. You don't do it because of that. Or, because the guy is afraid of the other guy (so wait until I stop).
Here's my reaction: So what? Why are you letting some [social] stigma dictate what you can and cannot do?
If it is people's happiness to whisper behind your back, let them! At least you contributed to their happiness.
Seriously. Ever heard of:
“All is fair in love and war” and “May the best man win”?
