Note I have upgraded the BIOS to the most recent version on lenovo's web site. Unfortunately, most of the tools I want to use are 64-bit so this version of Win10 is not really an option. <br>To test & try to troubleshoot, I installed the latest version of <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/Debian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Debian</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>. The install went fine, and the user experience was much better than the 32-bit Win10 – no real noticeable slowness. Ok, Linux is an option – but not what I had planned for this laptop. Let me wipe the drive (getting rid of <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/GRUB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GRUB</span></a>) and retry installing Win11 or Win10 LTSP. <br>Now when I boot with either Win11 or Win10 LTSP <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/USBs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USBs</span></a> the windows logo flashes and the dreaded black screen with blinking cursor appears. We don’t even get the option to install…. IrishMASMS<p>The next <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/thinkpad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>thinkpad</span></a> on my <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/workbench" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>workbench</span></a> is an <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/E450" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>E450</span></a> – I grabbed this from <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/ewaste" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ewaste</span></a> to provide a family member a better laptop. It has a <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/i5" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>i5</span></a>-5200U at 2.2Ghz, and a max 16GB of <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/DDR3L" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DDR3L</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/RAM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RAM</span></a> so it can/should run <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/Win11" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Win11</span></a>, <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a>, or <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/BSD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BSD</span></a> with ease. The IO is ok, with multiple <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/USB3" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USB3</span></a> ports, <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/HDMI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HDMI</span></a>, <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/ethernet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ethernet</span></a> and a memory card reader. This is a decent form factor, weight, and would make a decent laptop for someone. Though no docking station capabilities, they removed the port underneath. </p><p>There is a big BUT with this laptop though: it keeps freezing, and the video is glitching. Which may be why it went to ewaste…</p><p>I upgraded the DDR3L RAM to 16GB, and wiped the 500GB SSD that came with it. <br>Starting installing <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/Win11" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Win11</span></a>, and I let it install and reboot so I could refill my tea – to come back and the laptop was frozen with a black screen. <br>I rebooted, and it froze on the initial Win11 change password screen. <br>I rebooted again, went into the <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/Lenovo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Lenovo</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/BIOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BIOS</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/diagnostic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>diagnostic</span></a> tool, and started the full tests. I posted over on https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=136996 the parts I have from the #ThinkPad #T530 that I #cannibalized. One of the USB ports was dead, and there was nothing obvious on the motherboard that was wrong. So I am going to use the #USB port from the T530 daughtercard to fix a different ThinkPad I have where the plastic tonged inside the port is broken off.
I hate to take these parts to #ewaste and figured someone in the various communities could use these parts & would be interested.

I fell into the "pl2303hxa phased out since 2012" issue today
I needed to access two #Fortinet #FG-80C devices (to confirm they worked, ensure they had the default UID/password and configs, etc)
So I grabbed the trusty #serial to #USB dongle and a crossover cable
A #cisco labeled one even
Went to use my #Thinkpad running #win11 and after updating the drivers using Windows update received the dreaded "pl2303hxa phased out since 2012, please contact your supplier" message - and would not tell you what #COM port was configured.
Well, #WTF ?!?
Some further research has two theories on the motives by #Prolific (the makers of the #chipset used in the #dongle )
1) Prolific wants to sell more hardware. Which, go #DIAF #Prolific, nice way to backdate planned obsolescence
2) Seems a ton of fake, cheap dongles use a fake chipset based on Prolific's design. Prolific released a driver that identifies these cables, and will not allow the use of their driver for these fake dongles.
Again, go #DIAF Prolific. I can relate to the issues involved here, but go after the fakes not your customer base. I have no idea how long this dongle has been in my toolbox, or where it came from - and I'm certainly not going to throw away a perfectly good dongle.
There is a solution, follow along on this #github page and install their driver from 2008 that does not conduct this chipset check. All will work fine.

Which is a shame, since this T430s runs both 10 and 11 really well with the max #16GB of #RAM - it boots up in seconds with a #1TB #ssd I installed. The #keyboard has a nice feel to it (even with the chicklet keys), and is wide enough but not a surfboard wide. The #USB3 and the #expresscard ports let me use this for tech projects as well as the browsing and job hunting I am currently focused on.
I lost count the number of negative nancy's in these threads with the answer to throw it out / upgrade to something new - the hardware is over 10 years old, yadda yadda. 
Clearly they are not familiar with us #vintagecomputing folks, nor familiar with using an item until it completely falls apart.

Challenges with #windoz10 #windoz11 on a #thinkpad #T430s
Good old #intel #intel_corp never bothered to update & release #drivers for the HD #graphics #4000 #graphics4000
The driver is for #windows8 only
I figured this out by having the #windowsSecurity alerting that #coreIsolation - specifically #memoryIntegrity could not be enabled. With #idgkmd64.sys being released of July 2015.
If you remove the driver, the laptop defaults to the base Microsoft video driver with the horrid resolution, but you can enable memory integrity at this point. Reboot, and windows will alert that the driver cannot load because a security setting is blocking the loading of the driver.
I have dug around at length, there is no updated driver for Windows 10 or 11 (abandoned by Intel). I have tried windows update, Intel's own driver update tool, and the usual ThinkPad forums with no success. Ive found multiple posts of less experienced folks trying to decipher this issue and situation, all threads become dead ends.
So either you use the default Windows #VGA driver with memory integrity enabled and horrible resolution, or the #windows8 driver release with memory integrity disabled. Looks as I need to have a hardened configuration with #AV #EDR on this #T430s to manage the risks - more on that approach later.

The battery replacement went well, the #spicypillows are removed, and am working on my #macPro again.
The bottom plate is definitely warped. 
The directions that came with the replacement battery was way more involved than it needed to me; having me remove the motherboard and everything. Yea, sure you could go that path but there is a less invasive approach (and less risk of damaging parts or connectors with my sausage fingers).
Up and working again - and in line for getting #OCLP configured on this mid-2015 #macbook_pro
