"In a press conference held this Friday, the Inter-University Assembly of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) set out its position on the recent reforms to the University Tribunal Regulations and the situation the country is going through, raising its voice against the repression of students, the criminalization of protest, gender violence, forced disappearances and genocide in Palestine.

"'There is no dignified education without the dignity of the students. Down with the University Tribunal, up with the public and popular university', was the cry with which the conference closed."

After protests and five departments on strike, UNAM has stated its intent to repeal its decision to allow for the suspension or expulsion of those who commit so-called "acts of vandalism," widely seen as a move to quash protests.

Many demands remain, however, including around access to affordable, decent food, an end to repression, and democratization. We'll see what comes next.
