When hiking in the tail of a typhoon, Some river crossings become necessary. Thankfully the water was fairly warm. I doubly don't want to slip, as I have all my FPV drone gear on my back. That would be an expensive mistake. Making wild river crossings is dangerous, so if you find yourself in a similar position, but lack the experience, well, this is one of the "don't try this at home" kind of things.

Linux App Release Roundup (April 2025)

April brought a solid set of software updates to an assortment of different apps. In this post, I run through recent releases that didn’t get the “whole article” treatment on this blog. Sometimes, it’s a challenge to cover everything I want to (especially in an Ubuntu release month, as April was). It also relies on me knowing a new release is out, and in a timely fashion. I track as much as I can, as best as I can. But it’s easy for things to pass under my radar (which is why the new tips you send me through the :sys_more_orange:

Following a large #typhoon in 1874 a typhoon shelter was build in Causeway Bay on #Hongkong Island to protect fishers and their families during storms. Today the shelter houses not only #fisher boats, but also yachts, houseboats, and others. Following steady expansion the original Causeway Bay typhoon shelter was replaced and the shelter was moved up north to its current location. On the site of the original shelter the government undertook land reclamation and built Victoria Park.
Recently, as part of efforts to make Hong Kong Island's coastline more walkable and accessible to people in the city, new promenade parks have been opened in North Point and Causeway Bay, allowing easy strolls past the shelter.

Developer Revives Iconic Desktop Weather App for Linux

An iconic desktop weather app from Linux’s past has just blown in — yes, Typhoon is back! Typhoon’s conceit is simple: display current conditions at a location plus a 4 day forecast on a customisable coloured background. Weather data is via Open-Meteo, the open source meteorological API other Linux weather apps use. Long long-time OMG! Ubuntu readers may just about recall that Typhoon was forked from an older app called Stormcloud, the latter being the best-selling app on Ubuntu for 6 consecutive months (in the era when paid apps were sold in Software Center). Development on Typhoon dried up a :sys_more_orange:
