I visited my garden yesterday and several wood stakes that I'd pounded into the ground were horizontal and in some cases several feet from their original positions. And two trellises were bent over 10° or so. I initially thought "vandalism" but it turns out the winds from yesterday's storm were clocked at 95-105 mph. Peas and fava beans took a hit from the hail, too. Took an hour to clean up. #weather #delco #swarthmore #garden #wind #allotment #gardening

2025 Goals

I know a big slice of my online nerd world is into themes. I don’t think I could simplify that easily between family and work and everything else. I don’t really go for the more traditional resolutions either (and Prehn has some good advice in this area). That’s where I land on goals, which in some cases includes already known or planned things. Obviously major surprises could still upend those but mostly I think these are all not only achievable but should be fun to achieve.

  1. Maximize my time present at home within the new constraint of RTO5
  2. Continue to reduce incoming stuff and find better homes for stuff we don’t need
  3. Prepare child for middle school
  4. Attend my 20th college reunion
  5. Update estate planning
  6. Play more D&D with friends and family
  7. Improve the infrastructure of this blog
  8. Organize digital archives more

I guess if there is a theme it’s primarily family… with a side of nerdy projects. With a tween in the house now it’s all the more important that Andrle and I be there to support and care for him in all sorts of ways!

I have goals at work too but I can’t be particularly Specific here and, while a job is obviously a huge part of my time, it’s more of an ongoing continuous thing than something that fits into an annual boundary.

Continued thread

"Eight college buildings are connected into a geo-exchange loop that can provide heat and air-conditioning without energy from fossil fuels. The heart of the system is a remarkable, swoop-roofed dining hall constructed with a mass timber frame — a low-carbon alternative to the usual steel skeleton — and equipped with all electric appliances. With these two projects, #Swarthmore has taken a giant step toward its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035. "
