✧ wood stork ✧

The wood stork (Mycteria americana) is a large wading bird found in warmer parts of the Americas. North American birds may disperse to South America, where it is resident. Its bare head and neck are dark grey and the plumage is mostly white, with black on the tail and part of the wing. The sexes are similar, but the juvenile has a feathered head and a yellow...

▴ Cerro Torre

Known for its dramatic spire, Cerro Torre is one of Patagonia’s most iconic peaks – alongside Fitz Roy – on the Argentine side. While summiting the mountain is a serious challenge, the hike to the viewpoint (or the lagoon at its base) is much more managable.

Jaguars in the Brazil-Argentina Green Corridor have climbed from about 40 in 2010 to at least 105, thanks to projects that pay neighbours to protect, not shoot, them.

After a 13% forest loss in Paraná drove cats to prey on cattle, women “Jaguar Crocheteers” turned big-cat crafts into new income, biologists built predator-proof corrals, and joint ranger-rancher patrols spread coexistence training, all of which have been instrumental in restoring local populations. #Nature #wildlife #environment #southamerica #brazil #argentina #news #endangered #animals #jaguar #Conservation

Pot of the Day – Inca Urpu (c. 15th Century)

Although similar in style and function to the amphorae of ancient Greece, the urpu has a distinctive Inca shape, with its low handles, tall neck, and bulbous body. Rather than being strapped into ships like the amphorae, these vessels would have had ropes slung through the handles, around the lug at the base of the neck, and then strapped onto a porter’s back for transportation. They would have contained a variety food and beverages, most commonly chicha (fermented corn beer).

Most urpu bottles are decorated with this distinctive polychrome geometric design - black and red on a cream-colored background. It’s rare to find any kind of representational motifs on these pots; however, some examples have been shown to include khipu designs which is very intriguing!

▴ Glacier Grey Hike

View of Glacier Grey from a viewpoint along the trail between Refugio Paine Grande and Refugio Grey. The weather that day was exceptionally windy – even by Patagonian standards – but the dramatic cloud formations and shifting light made the rugged landscapes along Lago Grey all the more striking. Definitely one of the highlights of the W Trek!

Sunrise from the shores of Laguna Azul, with the iconic spires of Torres del Paine glowing red in the first light of day. We were lucky to have clear skies on our first morning, offering an unobstructed view of the towers.

Technically just outside the borders of Torres del Paine National Park, the nearby campsite at Laguna Azul still provides stunning views of the Paine Massif. It’s also a quieter alternative to the more crowded campsites inside the park, especially later in the season, and serves as a starting point for several trails around the lagoon.

Fire in the South American Ecosystems by Alessandra Fidelis & Vânia R. Pivello, 2025

The incidence of anthropogenic fires in South America has increased lately, and fire effects on the biodiversity and ecosystem services are of great concern. On the other hand, natural fires have been present in the continent for thousands of years, acting as an evolutionary driver of vegetation and fauna.

(Chile) Words of the Anarchist Comrade Mónica Caballero

I once heard that intimate life should not be mixed with politics, that is, that within the ideal, what we do individually and/or collectively to destroy the hegemony of power would have to be separated from our relationships with the beings we love, such as our parents, lovers, children, etc. As the years go by, these types of statements seem to me more and more distant from my reality and from the way I understand and intend to conduct politics.

I see no other way to construct and understand political work if it is not with the necessary and nourishing mixture of all the edges that converge in the development of each individual.

In this sense, mixing intimate life with “politics”, what could be more intimate than the pain of the loss of someone who came out of your womb? That pain, perhaps indescribable for those of us who have not lived through it, Luisa Toledo suffered in each of the murders of her three children, and carried in her heart until her last heartbeat.

That immense pain was transformed into the love that managed to forge some of the foundations for many to rise up against those who enrich themselves at the expense of the perpetuation of domination.

For this reason, among many other things, Luisa Toledo is the resilient mother of Rafael, Pablo and Eduardo, and she is also the comrade of dozens of demonstrations, she is the firm and passionate voice capable of delivering a clear message against the powerful, she is the one who stood up in solidarity with the prisoners… Luisa Toledo was, and always will be part of the construction of one or more generations of young combatants.

With these words I take this opportunity to send an affectionate greeting to the Vergara Toledo family.

Gabino: 61 Years After This Insurgent Feat

By: Comandante Nicolás Rodríguez Bautista (Gabino)

To the Colombian people, to the comrades of the National Liberation Army (ELN), I greet you with a fraternal embrace, which carries revolutionary and humanist motivations, on the 61st anniversary of this insurgent feat that we are about to commemorate this July 4.

Continuing today to accompany with our modest efforts the struggles of the people and the nation is worthy of note, for all the challenges we have had to overcome and the sacrifices assumed, to place dignity and commitment on high.

Other sister guerrilla forces that accompanied us on a stretch of the road, abandoned the path of the armed uprising and opted for other paths that we respect, but we differ from it.

It is true that in this more than half a century, there have been important changes in the life of the country, the world and undeniable developments in the life of humanity.

However, in Colombia, despite such changes, the economic, political and social causes that originated the armed uprising and the popular and guerrilla resistance are still in force, so the legitimacy of rebellion as a right of the people is not in question.

The fact that the ELN exists today as an insurgent force, in constant development, maintaining its principles, its program, its guidelines, a defined strategy and a coherent historical thread, reaffirms our points of view in this regard.

After the Social Outbreak of 2021 that made possible the election of a president from the popular sectors and with progressive thinking, several friends called on us to reconsider the continuity of being insurgents, to join forces in the government of change.

Dialogues were established with this government and agreements were made that aimed to find a political solution to the conflict, in order to solve the causes that originated the social and armed conflict in Colombia.

The government did not comply with what was agreed, because it maintains the same formula as the previous ones: demobilization, disarmament and reintegration of the insurgency.

This failed formula is not accepted by the ELN, among other things because at different times it has developed and the guerrillas always lose, the struggle for change is affected, the ruling class wins and violence increases.

The ELN knows that the indispensable changes to overcome the causes that originated the conflict, make it essential to unite, form alliances and coordinate among all of us who fight for it, even if we have differences or are of a different character, that is why in the ranks of the fighters there is no room for exclusion, this is the imposing practice of the ruling class.

All the efforts for the well-being of the people add up to the struggle and we do not underestimate them, however, we reiterate that the essential objective of the popular and revolutionary struggle are the economic, political and social changes that overcome the causes that originated the armed uprising and this commitment we reiterate today from our insurgent character.

Our being internationalist makes us in solidarity with all the peoples and nations of the world, who resist and fight for their liberation, to throw off the imperialist yoke.

The criminal genocide of the Palestinian people makes us more sensitive to our revolutionary anti-imperialist commitment.

Compañeras, compañeros elenos, firmness, loyalty and revolutionary commitment make us honor those who in these 61 years have given their lives with dignity, next to countless men and women of the people.

Today we continue to hold their flags aloft to shout with them: Not one Step Back… Liberation or Death!
