There is literally no #requirement at all for #LawEnforcementOfficers to know the #law they're supposed to #enforce (and abide by, theoretically), and, in fact, this #knowledge often hinders them from their most important work of #punishing everyone who would dare #offend the #Sheepdogs who watch over #sheep, I guess. Like us.

This is Lulu, a competitor in a recent yard dog trial. I really love this shot showing her running across the sheep. These dogs have such personality and it really comes out when they're working.

Lulu was excited, alert and energetic, while remaining calm and under control. I think this can really be seen in the attitude of the sheep who are completely nonplussed by her running along their backs.

A black and tan kelpie is running across the backs of a group of sheep in a pen. She is mid bound, with her front feet in the air and her hind legs launching her forward, as she pounces towards the camera. Her ears are pricked and her tongue is out; it is a hot summer day and she certainly appears to be enjoying herself. While the photo is zoomed relatively tight around the dog, a number of sheep can be seen in the foreground, looking relatively unfazed by the dog on their backs.

After a busy couple of months at work, I have finally managed to squeeze in some dog photography.

Last weekend I swung past some yard dog trials being run at the local agricultural show. I'd never been to a yard trial before and I wasn't prepared for how different it would be to photograph (compared to the sheepdog trials I'm used to).

The smaller field allowed me to get much closer to the action, but the dogs were faster, and right in among the sheep, making it difficult to keep them in frame.

Nevertheless, out of over 4,000 photos from the day, I managed to get a few that I'm pretty happy with. Now I just need to find the time to edit them and get them uploaded...

A black and tan kelpie is standing on top of a group of sheep held within a pen. It is a sunny day, there are gum trees in the background and portions of the steel fencing used to construct the pen can be seen within the shot. The dog is calm but alert, carefully watching his master (who is standing just out of shot) for the next instruction. The sheep seem completely unfazed by the dog standing on them, with not one of the sheep even looking at the dog. While the subject of the photo is the dog, it would be remiss of me to not mention how good the sheep look. The sunlight makes their fleeces look particularly golden and they seem extremely healthy and well cared for.

This fella's name is Boof, which certainly appeared to be an aptonym. I think this is probably one of my favourite dog names as it conveys a strong sense of personality which, in this case, the bearer was more than happy to lean into.

I got quite a few photos of this pup and not one of them was bad. Always showing off those bright eyes, pricked ears and flashing a smile, he hadn't allowed his tripedal configuration to slow him down; on the contrary, the 25% weight saving seems to have boosted his vigour. Which is lucky, because if there is one thing a Kelpie needs, it's more energy...

He is missing his entire front left leg, causing him to stand in a slightly curious tripodesque configuration. However, he appears completely unfazed by the unconventional limb arrangement and it certainly doesn't appear to be slowing him down. It does make me wonder whether it was this vitality and sense of adventure that necessitated the bio-alteration in the first place. Sadly I forgot to ask on the day, but should I manage to catch him again I'll be sure to query his backstory.

At a recent dog trial I promised a number of people that I would share my photos with them. While I'm normally extremely slow at editing my pics, I made a real effort this time to send them through as quickly as possible. And I've done it! I avoided procrastination and got photos out to everyone on my list! A rare achievement.

Oh wait, what about these lists from all the other shows I've been to? Maybe I should do something about that...

Nah! I'll edit some photos for Mastodon instead! Damn procrastination always wins in the end.

Here is the product of my procrastination. I can't remember this fella's name, but I met him at the 2023 Australian National Sheep Dog Trial Championship. I took quite a few shots across the day and every time he looked this happy.

His fur is a great colour to begin with, but the low sun gives it that extra shine.

A yellow working dog sits looking directly at the camera with pricked ears and a big open smile. He is sitting between his owners legs and the sun is shining on his right-hand side making his fur shine. The photo is cropped in, so only his head and upper body is in frame, along with the knees and thighs of his owner. Normally at this point I would add an amusing observation from the day of the photo, or make an attempt to psychoanalyse the dogs state of mind based on their facial expression. However, in this case, I would simply describe him as 'happy'. I have many other pictures of this pup, so I will endeavour to craft a witty observation for the next image I post.

On a final curious note, we've long wondered how much of this is genetic. They are first cousins once removed. They were raised in environments almost as opposite as it's possible to be, so not likely to be nurture. But, we have a ton of other relatives, all with zero #thunderphobic tendencies. Who's to say?

Either way, the rumbles have left since I've been rambling to the world about #sheepdogs. Time for sleep, and thanks for listening.

Apparently picking and writing a thread of all our #sheepdogs for #DogsOfMastodon is an all afternoon affair! This was a much more enjoyable way to spend time on the couch recovering from a nasty cold than playing too much sudoku. The pups have been taking turns checking in on me and keeping me company. I haven't been sick in four years, so they worry. 😆

In all my free time (🤣), I've turned into an accidental #HomeNetworking hobbyist, run the automated weekly build system for #OpenWRT fork #ROOter, spoil the giant pile of needy #sheepdogs, and play #mechanic on anything that doesn't run away from me fast enough. Any time left after that is usually "spotting" mechanical things, if it's machinery I'm probably interested. Some #planespotting (also an #ADSB collector), #shipspotting, and grew up #trainspotting (#railfan for Americans).
