I think this is the first time I’ve actually READ the manual for my sewing machine… which I’ve, uh, had for almost 10 years… Sooo I will be looking further into this beautiful document because oh my gosh I’ve just been winging it.

There is definitely a community of people who use - rather than collect - the beautiful old machines, both treadle and electric.
Boosting for reach in hopes you find some.

Leider läuft sie gerade nicht wie ich will. Naja sie hat auch Jahrgang 1970
I wound up taking some beauty shots of grandma’s sewing machine. I am shocked at how good of condition the wiring is in. Either the service center that worked on it did a wiring job.. at some point… or they used some mighty fine wire back in the day.
Edit: I don't think it's been re-wired; the bakelite plug looks original.
More in the thread…
I have my grandmother’s sewing machine. I did a little digging tonight, and it appears to be a New Home NLB from probably 1949.
I guess it’s time to read a manual and see if I have all/enough parts, if anything needs to be replaced, and what the spare parts situation is for things like bobbins or bobbin cases.
Also should probably give it an electrical once over to make sure everything is in safe operating condition.
I’m having unexpected difficulties finding Class 15J bobbins.
I even tried buying Singer branded Class 15J bobbins on Amazon, and what I received is definitely not the right size.
My local fabric store has tons of Class 15, but no 15J
Another #sewingmachine restoration project that was long overdue: fixing the finish on the bentwood case of my Singer 99. I didn't think to take a before photo, but it was horrible -- the original shellac had rubbed away in streaks, and the whole thing was a sad, dirty brown. I scraped off the crispy old finish (going verrrry carefully around the Singer decal) and applied many coats of penetrating wax. This morning I buffed it and removed the residue.
Is it perfect? No, and I still need to glue down some loose veneer and fill in some chips on the inside, and replace the felt spacers that I'd never noticed before, but it's about a thousand times better. I still need to do the base, but first I need to take the machine off its hinges. I also need to set up a strong draft to blow the wax fumes away next time so that I don't poison myself again.
Bonus unrelated woodworking task that was also easier than I thought it would be: I finally fixed the broken piece of this clothes horse properly after repeatedly fixing it badly for years. I only really needed a coping saw and a box cutter (and glue, and clamps, and sandpaper). I did partially re-cut the hole with a rotary tool, but didn't have an appropriate bit, so using sandpaper wrapped around a dowel from the start would probably have been just as effective.
Since my joints are going to be this way for the foreseeable future (boo,) I'm going to try to switch (mostly) from hand sewing to machine sewing. What tips do folks have on using sewing machines? Generally, and also for quilting, or just anything you feel like typing out. I have intermittently swollen joints, hypermobility, dysautonomia, etc. I do generally have good motor control because I'm into so many crafts, including fabric and fiber arts. Thank you! #sewing #sewingMachine #quilting
I broke a needle because I failed to remove a pin. These old hand-crank sewing machines can't just flex around a pin.
I have replacement needles, stored in a hard, plastic case with flip-up lid, which is wrapped in wax paper envelope. When my grandma bought these, they already had plastic, but not cellophane. That'd be just after World War II. (She bought German-made goods!)
I've had this machine since the mid-1980s. It's outlasted grandma by 3+ decades.
Must... resist... free....sewing machine.
(ps. down the street in my town, Newbury Park, if anyone local wants to take it, I'll fix the sewing machine for you, free!)
To the person who last minute ebay-sniped me (for mere pennies over my max bid!) for an industrial sewing machine (it was 1/5th what it's worth!) - I wish you all the best.
I hope it meets all your sewing needs and helps you realise your fabric dreams.
You're still a sneaky shit though.
(Seriously they outbid me with 2 seconds to go ! Ugh!)
1880's Treadle machine unelectrified, mounted on a desktop (holes I cut myself!) Running on treadle power for the first time in a hundred years, probably. May tighten the belt.
I did leave the lamp on there. Which will require routing the wires away from the machine and plugging into the wall.
Still outside to lose more funky smells. UV, air, window cleaner to neutralize any ancient smoke particles, etc.
Finally was able to pry out the antique needle... took 3 days.
First time this treadle machine has been mounted on a treadle in around 100 years. Not done yet, the single hole is just too tight, I am going to cut the holes into a long slot or two short slots instead #sewingmachinerestoration #sewingmachine
Just some careful measurements, marking, and a jigsaw away from joining this sewing machine to a treadle again, a 100 or so years later. #sewingmachine #sewing #sewingmachinerestoration
1880's New Home sewing machine driven by a more modern motor (1920's to 1940's?). The motor is being removed to put this on a treadle!
Back to 3 sewing machines, LOL. The price was right (free on curb), and I have a treadle in need of a machine. I think this is an 1879 machine or so converted to electric in the 1930's or 1940's. I accumulate projects as fast as I complete them, ha ha. I am going to de-electrify this machine and cut a custom hole and build a support in the desk with treadle I have. #sewingmachinerepair #sewingmachine

Aha! Thanks for the manual John! #sewingmachine
@ai6yr
But I bet you'll find the pulley lines up fine with the treadle wheel, and the base will either fit or nearly fit the treadle base. Those series universal motors are crap, anyway.
