Derived from Latin ‘solitude,’ saudade means a profound longing for something that can barely be remembered, may never have happened, that will never happen, or the wish for it to happen or to return to it. A person never embraced. It is a deep melancholic state, like the blues. Saudade is attached to ‘soul’ and the word ‘fate’ derived from the word ‘Fado,’ the soulful songs of Portugal.</span></p><p><span>I suspect Romans brought the word to the Iberian Peninsula. They liked to train their legions there, who suffered intense homesickness, it is written.
