I have to be honest and say that this sudden revelation I've just had about #SDR (software defined #radio) is a big deal to me. Even though I'm a ham (although my license is actually expired and I need to fix that), I never bothered before with SDR, since I owned actual all-band transceivers, but the advent of the #RaspberryPi and my #travel network rig means I now have a perfect platform for a portable/travel SDR receiver, for only $50 more.

I don't know why this didn't occur to me before, but I was just thinking that it might be pretty cool to add a software defined #radio receiver #SDR to my travel #RaspberryPi 4B.

I'm also seriously considering replacing the #powerbank on my #travel WiFi network board with two smaller powerbanks for better flexibility and more battery life. I cannot do passthrough power with the one bank, because I have to use the input port for output.

While admitting that most of the Zero Retries amateur radio newsletter is way over my head — and I'm a General Class license holder — I was able to pull out of the most recent issue that THIS IS THE RADIO TO GET (and to beat):

The kid and I were at Kohl's (discount department store, like TK Maxx) and I stumbled across a nice little $20 puzzle for myself. It's only got two pieces, though.

It's a wireless grill thermometer, which is going to have some weirdo custom wireless protocol in an ISM band. These are usually fun protocols to reverse engineer. I expect all the text logic is in the display, but who knows?!

it's squirreled away for a day when I need the distraction.

I feel like my FM de-emphasis filter isn't quite right. Does anyone happen to know if FM broadcasts typically have this kind of spectrum after de-emphasis? (left: before, right: after). I used a very basic Butterworth IIR filter to but it feels like the slope is too steep.

Creating an Open Source DMR Transceiver with a LimeSDR Mini

"I wrote an article about the implementation of an open-source DMR transceiver using the LimeSDR-mini, GNU Radio and Codec2, which could be used for SDR experiments.

The DMR modem was designed to work both in repeater and direct (DMO) mode, and supports voice and other basic features of the ETSI TS 102 361-1 standard.

In the article there is discussion about aspects of the TDMA transmission, time synchronization, as well as how David Rowe's Codec2 can be used to replace the default vocoder."

rtl-sdr.com · Creating an Open Source DMR Transceiver with a LimeSDR MiniThank you to Adrian Musceac for writing and sharing his article detailing how he implemented an open-source DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) transceiver modem with his LimeSDR Mini and GNU Radio. DMR is a digital voice communications protocol often used by commercial business band radios, as well as by amateur radio hobbyists. Adrian explains: I wrote an article about the implementation of an open-source DMR transceiver using the LimeSDR-mini, GNU Radio and Codec2, which could be used for SDR experiments. #GNURadio is a free & #opensource software development toolkit that provides signal processing blocks to implement software radios. It can be used with readily-available low-cost external RF hardware to create software-defined radios, or without hardware in a simulation-like environment. It is widely used in research, industry, academia, government, and hobbyist environments to support both wireless communications research and real-world radio systems 」

@micahflee lemme guess: @eff just took a multi-network eSIM and multi-network WWAN modules to scan for "#deauth" / "#EvilTwin" attacks?

Cuz I remember @heiseonline or @golem actually suggest this as a method to detect #IMSIcatchers without requiring an expensive #SDR:

  • By precisely looking when which WWAN stick (for #3G back then) got disconnected and warning if they all got disconnected & reconnected at the same time...

AFAIK #GSMK uses that same technique for their #Baseband-#Firewall to automatically detect #Interception attempts and deploy countermeasures!

Crowdsourcing #DSP creativity!

You could help @gnuradio 's block documentation wiki a lot if you could try out our instructions for how to add example flowgraphs to Block Doc pages!
wiki.gnuradio.org/index.php?ti

The documentation team (and countless contributors) have created a host of 555 block documentation pages to date. Not every single one of these has an example flowgraph that really illustrates the useful things you could do with that block.
Could you help?
