I took my bike on the train to Helensburgh this week, and cycled around the Gareloch to Kilcreggan, followed by the ferry over to Gourock, then the train home.

If you survive the lung-busting climb into Kilcreggan, there is an excellent cafe on the main street to restore your energy levels.

The recent spell of dry, sunny weather has been great for cycling, but all good things must come to an end – and this is scheduled for this weekend it seems 😞 .

Also, after working once my replacement #Scotrail "smart" card is borked again. I suspect the card is fine and the issue is that flexipass tickets just don't really work with it. Unless my journey is so short that it confuses the system. When I tap out it says "journey started" and decrements an extra ticket. So, despite what I've been told I'm just going to stop tapping out.

#ScotRail has launched a UK-first satellite-based Wi-Fi system on #trains in the Scottish Highlands, improving connectivity for passengers. Six Class 158 trains, running from Inverness to Wick, Thurso, Kyle of #Lochalsh, and #Aberdeen, will trial the technology for six months. Developed with Clarus Networks, the system connects to a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, addressing long-standing connectivity issues. Supported by the Scottish Government, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and the Scottish Futures Trust, the project offers benefits such as improved Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi calling, GPS tracking, and on-board CCTV access. If successful, the technology could be rolled out across the Class 158 fleet and influence future train procurements. The initiative aims to boost rural digital connectivity, supporting economic resilience and growth in remote areas, in line with the #Scottish Government’s focus on improving digital services for rural communities.

A #Transport Scotland-led Working Group has confirmed that the #ScotRail alcohol ban will be lifted from 2 June 2025. Alcohol will be permitted on ScotRail #trains between 10am and 9pm, though restrictions may still apply during major events. The group, which met for the first time on 8 May 2025, is also reviewing enforcement powers to better tackle antisocial behaviour (ASB) on Scotland’s railways and protect staff and passengers. The group aims to assess and strengthen current powers to deal more effectively with repeat offenders. Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop welcomed the collaborative approach, while BTP #Scotland emphasised their continued focus on ASB and encouraged public reporting via text. Unions including ASLEF, RMT and TSSA supported the ban’s removal but called for stronger protections for staff, visible police presence, and tougher penalties for abuse and violence on the rail network.

#Lairg and Newtonmore stations in the #Scottish Highlands are set to blossom this spring thanks to new adopters. As part of ScotRail’s ‘Adopt a Station’ programme, Friends of Lairg and Friends of #Newtonmore have committed to enhancing these stations by improving green spaces, planting floral displays, and creating a more welcoming environment for passengers. With ScotRail’s support, the adopters aim to make the stations vibrant, accessible, and pleasant for the local community and travellers. #ScotRail Communications Director David Ross praised the initiative, highlighting how local communities can come together to improve their stations and enhance the travel experience for all.

Scotland’s #Railway has enhanced accessibility by installing #British Sign Language (BSL) totems at four major stations: #Glasgow Queen Street, #Edinburgh Waverley, Haymarket, and Dundee. These digital displays provide real-time travel information in BSL using a virtual interpreter, ensuring Deaf BSL users can access the same updates as hearing passengers. The totems also feature touchscreen functionality for personalised information. This initiative builds on previous work, including BSL customer information screens at Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central. #ScotRail and Network Rail aim to improve inclusivity and make rail travel more accessible for everyone. The project reflects their ongoing commitment to enhancing passenger experience and #accessibility across Scotland’s Railway.

Scotland’s #Railway celebrates its one-year charity partnership with Age Scotland, raising almost £332,000 to support older people in #Scotland. The partnership, which began in April 2024, has focused on tackling loneliness and promoting inclusivity. Fundraising efforts included station collections, Delay Repay donations, and staff events like bake sales and a 13-mile walk. Employees also took part in challenges such as abseiling and zip-lining. In-kind support included complimentary travel for Age Scotland staff and brand awareness campaigns across stations and trains. In 2025, further fundraising events, such as Kiltwalks and marathons, will continue. Scotland’s Railway staff will also volunteer as Friendship Callers, providing companionship to lonely older people. Both #ScotRail and Network Rail expressed pride in the partnership and commitment to supporting Age Scotland’s vital work in the coming years.

So lovely and knowledgeable train people: when I look at trains between Glasgow and Edinburgh, some of them have first class available, others don’t. Is there any logic in it, and how can I quickly see in the app if first class is available in a specific train with tapping through the available tickets? And on the boards in the station?
